The Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) director, Ashish Nanda, has resigned from his post before the end of his tenure. His sudden resignation before one year before the expiration of his has surprised everyone. The true reason behind his resignation remains undisclosed but as per the sources he has cited personal reasons to be the cause of resignation.
Kumar Mangalam Birla (IIM-A, Chairman) is said to have accepted the resignation of Ashish Nanda. In his acceptance letter to Nanda he mentioned “Dear Prof. Nanda, I have received your resignation dated 26/4/2017. We have had a conversation about this for the past couple of weeks, and I fully understand your need to be with family and the inconvenience that the separation is causing you. Hence, I accept your resignation, albeit with regret,”
Ashish Nanda has previously worked as a Robert Braucher Professor of Practice at Harvard Law School and later became the successor to Samir Barua as the IIM-A Director in September 2013. The then Chairman of the Board of Governors and Chairman of L&T Group, AM Naik, persuaded Nanda to head the institute and convinced him to come back to India from the US.
During his working tenure at IIM-A, Ashish Nanda took crucial initiatives to expand the reach of institute in various other domains and courses such as e-PGP — a two-year online course targeting working executives and entrepreneurs through an interactive on-site learning platform.
Nanda’s Take on Resignation
Nanda has termed his exit as a “good time as any for leadership transition at the institute”, He also wrote to the members of the IIM-A community: “Personally, living a long distance from my wife and son has been a challenge. When I joined, I had committed to serving at most one term. On September 1, it will be four years, to the day, since I took charge. It is a good time to step aside and hand over the responsibility and honour of leading the institute to the next, fortunate person.”
