With the D-day of Nov 26 approaching fast for CAT 2017 aspirants, the organizing institute has started giving out more information about the upcoming MBA entrance exam. This year, CAT 2017 – the MBA entrance exam which is gateway to the top MBA colleges in India including the IIMs, is being organized by IIM Lucknow. The organizing institute has provided some insights in the composition of candidates appearing for this year’s CAT exam.

As per the official report coming from CAT exam centre, this year the number of women candidates is highest in the last 5 years. This is a very positive trend keeping in mind that all the top MBA Colleges in India, especially the IIMs, have been trying to promote gender diversity in their campuses.

Statistics

Looking at the statistics released by the CAT 2017 organizing institute i.e. IIM Lucknow, the number of women candidates registered this year stands at 78,009. While announcing the news, CAT 2017 convener Prof Neeraj Dwivedi also said that the rise in the number of women candidates is marginal translating to growth of 1.16% from 2016’s number of 76,704. But when you look at the overall CAT registration figure of 2.31 lakh candidates, which is lower as compared to 2.32 lakhs of previous year; the rise in the number of women candidates surely comes across as a pleasant surprise.

Consistent rise over the years

Looking at the number of women candidates registering for CAT MBAexam, the number has been rising consistently over the years. The breakup of participation of women candidates or last 5 years in the CAT MBA entrance exam is given in the table below:

Year

No of Women Candidates

CAT 2017

78,009

CAT 2016

76,704

CAT 2015

69, 176

CAT 2014

59,211

CAT 2013

The above table clearly shows that the number of women candidates registering for the biggest MBA entrance exam is on the rise consistently. This is the result of the conscious effort made by IIMs and all the other top MBA colleges in India to promote gender diversity on their campuses. However, despite this the growth has been quite slow, which needs to be addressed.
