DR. Varadarajulu, EUS Expert, Trains Doctors at IMS & SUM Hospital, SOA University

Bhubaneswar, Oct. 4: A group of doctors drawn from different parts of the country are being trained in the latest Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) technology by Dr. Shyam Varadarajulu, acknowledged as the world’s top most EUS expert and researcher, at the IMS and SUM Hospital here since Monday.

The four-day advanced EUS workshop has been organized by the department of Gastroenterology of IMS and SUM Hospital.

EUS or Endo-ultrasonography is a medical procedure in which endosonocopy (insertion of a probe into a hollow organ) is combined with high resolution ultrasound to obtain images of the internal organs in the chest, abdomen and colon, much better than CT and MRI. Diseases deep inside the chest and abdomen are diagnosed very accurately by this technology. Tissue sample or biopsy obtained from deep structures very safely leading to correct diagnosis of cancers and other diseases. It helps staging different cancers for proper treatment.

The greatest advantage of this advanced technology is to perform different blood less surgeries inside the chest and abdomen extremely safely and patients are discharged the same day. It helps to provide palliative treatment for very advanced cancers, thus improving the quality of life. This technology is one of the great discovery in the field of intervention Gastroenterology, extremely accurate in diagnosing and treating diseases.

Dr. Varadarajulu, an Indian-American, is the Medical Director for Interventional Endoscopy at the Florida Hospital, Orlando, USA and is invited around the world to train doctors in the advanced technology. He is also Professor of Medicine at the University of Central Florida.

“Now with EUS we can actually see the root cause of diseases and hence treatment is much more accurate,” Dr. Varadarajulu said adding experts were looking to develop Endoscopic ET scans and MRI scans too. The reason is, EUS is very accurate and specific,” he said.

“We are extremely fortunate to have Dr. Varadarajulu with us at Bhubaneswar for this workshop. I was trained by him and it is a great opportunity for others to learn from such a stalwart expert,” said Dr. Manoj Kumar Sahu, Head of the department of Gastroenterology at IMS and SUM Hospital.

    

The Institute of Medical Sciences and Sum Hospital (IMSSH), the faculty of medical sciences of the university with 750-beds, aims at high quality medical education imparted by top-class teachers, and health care by deploying excellent modern and advanced diagnostic, surgical, life saving equipment and best medical facilities for the patients at affordable cost. The hospital has also added a comprehensive Oncology department where diagnosis and management, including advanced surgery are conducted at the most affordable cost with follow-up treatment available for patients.

All the institutes have excellent infrastructure while the libraries comprise of Indian/foreign books and journals besides e-Library  facility.  They  boast  of  a meritorious  talent  pool  of  over  1100  faculty  members. The University is spread across 2.5 million square feet of built up area housing its various facilities with new arenas coming up to promote sports.

The University has signed a slew of MoUs with overseas universities for research collaboration and exchange of ideas and experiences. MoUs have been signed with the Dongseo University, Busan, South Korea, Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, Cambodia University for Specialties, Phnom Penh, Daffodil International University, Dhaka, Salahuddin University, Arbil, Iraq, University of Transport, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, Rajmangala University of Technology, Phra Nakhon, Thailand and University of Texas, USA. The areas of cooperation include joint research activities, exchange of research scientists and faculty members, exchange of students and credits, exchange of academic materials and other information, participation in seminars and academic meetings and special short-term training programs. Signing of an MoU with Aarhus University of Denmark is expected this year.

With its focus on research and emphasis on a strong academic foundation, the Siksha 'O' Anusandhan University, also known as SOA University, in Bhubaneswar is today reckoned as a center of superlative professional education. This multidisciplinary temple of learning, with a student base of around 10,000, is carving out a niche for itself among the best.
