What is Mechatronic engineering?

Mechatronics is a combination of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer engineering and information technology. Mechatronics is a design process to create more functional and adaptable products. For example, a computer hard disc drive,  CD or DVD player, a video cassette recorder (VCR, all are the innovatory products of mechatronic engineering.  Every product is essentially mechanical in nature, with integral design of the electrical and computer control systems that are critical to its operation.

Work description of Mechatronic engineers

A Mechatronics engineer’s job is to unite the principles of mechanics, electronics, and computing to produce a smart, reliable and economical system. From design and testing to manufacture, each and every aspect of the development of a smart machine is taken care by the mechatronic engineers. An industrial robot that includes aspects of electronics, mechanics, and computing, is a prime example of the mechatronics work.

Mechatronics Engineering Education

B.Tech Mechatronics programme provides engineers with multi-disciplinary skills. The four years’ graduation programme strengthens the students with the skills that they can use in computers, micro-controllers, programmable logical controllers, making them capable to design, construct and run  the factory production lines and automated processes. Students who have cleared their 12th class exam with Physics, Chemistry, Maths subjects are eligible for this course.

Some of the top colleges offering mechatronics engineering programme in India are listed below:

Career in Mechtronic engineering:

Work fields offered to Mechatronic engineers are research, design, develop, or test automation, intelligent systems, smart devices, or industrial systems control. Mechatronic engineers work in companies that require hi-tech input into what they are developing. They can also find hot career options in emerging fields like bioengineering, nanotechnology and robotics.

Either they work in large global enterprises developing futuristic vehicles, challenging defence technology and revolutionising consumer products or in smaller innovative ‘high tech’ companies supplying software, parts and equipment, Mechatronic engineers are offered handsome salary packages.

Due to being interdisciplinary in nature, modern machines in industry do not belong to any one branch of engineering. The mechatronic engineers are found to be a perfect fit to such interdisciplinary sectors. The students have bright job prospects in the automobile manufacturing, engineering and electronics industries.
