How to build focus and get rid of distractions

Building and maintaining focus is a very important part of studies and scoring good marks. The number of hours you study for doesn't matter if you get nothing in your head and don't remember anything an hour later. While there are a lot of ways to increase and enhance focus, we bring some highly practical and effective ones to help you out.

Build the focus stamina: Like your physical stamina, mental stamina also increases and becomes better with practice. To build the stamina, give yourself a specific amount of time and try to focus on one task for that time. Keep the goals achievable in the beginning by slowly increasing the time as your stamina builds. Repeating this process everyday will make you realise you are able to focus on a thing longer than you had anticipated.

Read: We do so much binge reading on the internet that by the time we are required to read something consequential, our brain is tired and refuses to process any information. To improve the focus, give yourself a target of reading for 30 minutes straight. Reading just one piece of text without using mobile phone or other getting distracted by other things can b really helpful in developing focus.

Avoid multi-tasking: It might seem like a good idea to multi task in order to get multiple things done at one time. However, it has been proven that such an approach reduces the mind's ability focus to great extent. You might not realize it but chatting with friends can reduce your focus and thus efficiency to a large extent. Try to work towards getting just one thing done at a time and you'll see that you get this done more quickly.

Pause and reflect: If it has been one of those days when you got really exhausted but did not actually achieve anything, it would be good to think about the reason for it so that it does not happen again.

You might find yourself in these situations:

If you were at office the entire day, but really spent all the time helping out your colleagues instead of getting any work done for yourself, then next time, you should be less helpful and a little bit more selfish.

Did you waste the entire day reading articles on Facebook or going through your Instagram feed for no particular reason? If yes, then you should try to avoid doing that from the next day because it doesn't really help your productivity to know what your batch mate in another ate for the breakfast.

By trying to figure out the problem and its solution, you can go a long way towards making  required changes in your lifestyle.

Have a good pre-work routine: By having a good pre-work routine, you can keep yourself motivated and thus boost your focus and concentration. You can do it in following ways:

Getting enough sleep: By sleeping and getting up at the same time every day, you get it habituated to a routine and after a point you don't groggy or tired.

Eating healthy breakfast: Eating a good breakfast is the key to maintaining your energy level throughout the day. Eat healthy carbs like oatmeal or wheat cereal, proteins like eggs or lean turkey, and some fruits or vegetables to get your day started.

Exercising: Exercising daily, even if it is for 15-20 minutes can help you to stretch your muscles and get the blood pumping through your body. A general exercise like walking or aerobics can be highly useful in getting you in the groove for challenges of the day.

Watch caffeine intake: We are sure that that cup of coffee feels heavenly in the morning but it also dehydrates your body to a great extent. Having too much coffee in the night can also hinder your sleep which will ultimately affect your routine.

Make a to-do list: Making a task list and accomplishing those tasks can help you in achieving your targets and feeling good about the achievement as you will have tangible results in front of your eyes.

Start by making a list of three things you need to do on that particular day, next day and month. Accept the challenges and make sure you reach your goals for the day to feel accomplished. If you are still left with time, get a jump start and work on the other tasks.

Give yourself a reward, preferably in the form a break. Every time you check any item off of your to-do list, give yourself a small break.

Developing focus is not hard as it seems and it only requires you to be persistent through the entire process. It is easy to get distracted in this age of social media so it is necessary that you tone down your usage of and dependence on those platforms.
