The Supreme Court in its latest judgement on 13 May, 2011 scrapped the 100 percent reservation for Army kids in Army College of Medical Sciences in Delhi Cantonment. The judgement ruled that non-minority educational institutions have no right to admit students of their choice. The decision was taken by a bench including Justices B Sudershan Reddy and S S Nijjar.
The bench believed that giving such a right to any non-minority institutions “would be detrimental to the true nature of education as an occupation, damage environment in which our students are taught the lessons of life, and imparted knowledge.” The court has instructed ACMS to admit eligible students into first year of MBBS course irrespective of their defence background.
Indian Medical Association and students filed the petition and challenged the admission process of ACMS–approved by Delhi government– through Counsel, Dr Aman Hingorani. Army School of Medical Sciences till date allowed admission to wards of serving and former Army personnel.
The Army College of Medical Sciences (ACMS) was established by Army Welfare Education Society (AWES) in April 2008. The college is affiliated to Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU) Delhi.
