Devyani Khobragade, India’s Deputy Consul General in New York was arrested by law enforcement authorizes on visa fraud charges and released on a 250000 dollar bond after she pleaded not guilty in a court.
At the time of arrest Devyani Khobragade was India’s deputy consul general for political, economic, commercial and women’s affairs at the Consulate General of India in New York.
After Devyani Khobragade was taken into custody on 12 December 2013, the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York announced charges of fraud against her and false statements in connection with the visa application of an Indian national employed as domestic helper in her home.
Since she was charged with visa fraud and making false statements which carry maximum sentences of ten years and five years in prison respectively.
