Answers with Explanation

1. (a) Bharat Heavy Electricals

In April 2017, the Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL) signed an agreement with the Indian Railways for for Rooftop Solar Photo Voltaic (SPV) Systems to decrease its carbon footprint.

2. (d) China

As per a report released by the Amnesty International in April 2017, at least 1,032 people were executed in 23 countries in 2016. And, most executions took place in China, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Pakistan – in that order.

3. (a) Russia

Russia has vetoed a UN draft resolution demanding the Syrian government cooperate with an investigation of a suspected chemical attack. The US, Britain, France and many other western countries believe that President Bashar al-Assad's forces were responsible for the chemical attack.

4. (a) India

The Indian School team has won the 5th edition of Asian School Hockey Championship after defeating Malaysia by 5-1 at the Aishbagh Stadium in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.

5. (d) Girdhar Malviya

The Committee constituted to prepare Draft Ganga Act submitted its report to the Union Minister of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Uma Bharti. The Chairman of the committee was Justice (retd) Girdhar Malviya.

6. (c) Dinesh Sharma Committee

The Union Government has recently constituted an Inter-Disciplinary Committee to examine the existing framework with regard to Virtual Currencies. The Committee will take stock of the present status of Virtual Currencies both in India and globally. The Committee will be chaired by Dinesh Sharma, the Special Secretary of Economic Affairs, and will submit its report within 3 months.

7. (b) Dubai

On the auspicious day of Baisakhi, the Gurudwara in Dubai today entered the Guinness Book of Records for hosting Breakfast for people of 101 nationalities. Officially called “Breakfast for Diversity”, the occasion exemplified the spirit of charity, religious and cultural tolerance amongst people of various nationalities and faith.

8. (d) I, II and III

India and Australia on 10 April 2017 signed 6 agreements to boost the bilateral cooperation between the two nations. The signed agreements include cooperation in combating international terrorism and transnational organised crime. These agreements were signed during Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s four-day visit to India. He will be in India from 9 April to 12 April 2017. This is Turnbull’s first visit to India since he assumed office in 2015.

9. (b) Malala Yousafzai

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on 10 April 2017 designated Malala Yousafzai as a UN Messenger of Peace with a special focus on girls’ education. Nobel Laureate Yousafzai is the youngest-ever UN Messenger of Peace. She is also the first one to be designated by Secretary-General Guterres since he assumed office in January 2017.

10. (a) National Commission for Backward Classes

The Lok Sabha on 10 April 2017 passed the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Third Amendment) Bill, 2017. It was passed by the house with 360 MPs voting in favour and 2 against the bill. It seeks to give constitutional status to the National Commission for Backward Classes.

11. (c) Only II and III

The Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order (Amendment) Bill, 2017 was introduced in Lok Sabha on March 10, 2017 by the Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment, Thawar Chand Gehlot. It seeks to modify the list of Schedule Castes for the state of Odisha. The castes Sualgiri and Swalgiri will be introduced as synonyms to the Sabakhia caste in the list of SCs for the state of Odisha.

12. (b) Nakshe

The Union Minister for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, Harsh Vardhan launched a new web portal called ‘nakshe’ in New Delhi on 10 April 2017. The launch commemorates the 250th anniversary of Survey of India (SoI).

13. (c) Only II and III

India and Bangladesh on 8 April 2017 signed 22 agreements to boost the bilateral cooperation between the two countries. The agreements were inked after delegation level talks were held between the two nations in the Hyderabad House, New Delhi. British DJ Paul Oakenfold has reached Mount Everest’s base camp and has planned to host the “highest party on earth” by performing a set at 5380 metres.
