General Knowledge Category: India: An Overview

On September 5, 1888, Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born in a middle class family at Tirutani in Tamil Nadu. He was an Indian philosopher and statesman.

He introduced the thinking of western idealist philosophers into Indian thought. Some of his students and friends approached him and requested him to allow them to celebrate his birthday but he said, "instead of celebrating my birthday separately, it would be my proud privilege if September 5th is observed as Teacher's day".
