Rock Shelters of Bhimbetka: Facts at a Glance

Bhimbetka caves are located in the Raisen District of Madhya Pradesh. These Rock Shelters are in the foothills of the Vindhyan Mountains on the southern edge of the central Indian plateau.  Dr V. S. Wakankar (one of the most renowned archeologists), discovered these caves in 1958. The word 'Bhimbetka', derived from 'Bhim Baitka'. These caves are named after 'Bhima', one of the five Pandavas of Mahabharata. Bhimbetika simply means “sitting place of Bhima".

The Kanha National Park: The Largest Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh

The Kanha National Park is situated in the Maikal range of Satpuras in Madhya Pradesh. The national park is being popularized as the Tiger reserve. The Sanchi Stupa: Facts at a Glance

Livestock Resources

India is on first rank on the livestock resources followed by United States of America. The total livestock in India are- 14% Cows and Oxen, and 57 % buffaloes of the world. However, buffaloes contribute 53 % in total country’s milk production. Number of Cows and Oxen (Decreasing Order) - Madhya Pradesh > West Bengal > Uttar Pradesh > Maharashtra. Canal Irrigation in India

Canal irrigation is the most important form of irrigation in India. It is cheaper.  About half of 165.97 lakh hectare land was irrigated by canals during 2008-09 from which half of irrigated land concentrated  in the Northern plain. If we calculate it statewise, then 91.72 % of irrigated area in Jammu & Kashmir, 66.24 % in Chhattisgarh, 64.7 % in Odisha, 44.28% in Haryana and 34.63 % in Andhra Pradesh is irrigated by canals. The maximum part of the total irrigated area of the country by canals is in Uttar Pradesh. Other major states where irrigation is done by canals are Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab and Bihar. There are two types- Inundation Canal and Perennial Canals.

Forest Resources

Forests are among the most diverse and widespread ecosystems on earth, and have many functions: they provide timber and other forest products; have cultural values; deliver recreation benefits and ecosystem services, including regulation of soil, air and water; are reservoirs for biodiversity; and act as carbon sinks. Tank Irrigation in India

The Tank irrigation is more in the rocky plateau area of the county, where the rainfall is uneven and highly seasonal. The Eastern Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Orissa, Interiors of Tamil Nadu and some parts of Andhra Pradesh have more land under tank irrigation. Chandellas of Bundelkhand

Modern Bundelkhand was known as Jejakabhukti during 10th and 11th century and was ruled by Chandellas. These Rajput emperors were fond of art and culture and the temples of Khajrao (Madhya Pradesh) were built during this time. Chandellas had maternal relations with Kalachuris. Kalinjar, Mahotsavanagar and Khajrao were the important cities of this dynasty. The fields of art and architecture flourished during the rule of Chandellas. The Kalachuri’s of Tripuri
