Q. Why do diamonds rain on Saturn and Jupiter?
Ans. On the planets Saturn and Jupiter, the huge lightning storms turn methane into soot (unburnt carbon particles). As these soot clouds fall towards the planets, they clump together forming chunks of graphite which gets subjected to intense pressure from the atmosphere as it gets closer to the planets’ core and gets compressed into the shiny precious stones that we lovingly call diamonds. Thus, we can say that it literally rains diamonds on Saturn and Jupiter. But these diamonds do not stay in solid form for too long as when they move farther into the depths of the planets, the pressure and temperature there are strong enough to melt them into liquid, creating liquid diamonds.
