Q. Why does a hen turn her eggs up and down, one after the other?
Ans. The hen turns its eggs almost 50 times a day during incubation period. It does it to heat the eggs evenly on all sides. This helps to keep the chick from sticking to the shell which may otherwise result in a poor hatch. Turning the egg facilitates movement of the embryo into the normal hatching position which stimulates the growth of the embryonic membranes and increases the heart rate which in turn helps in easy absorption of the nutrients from the yolk and albumen and improves the oxygen-carbon dioxide exchange within the egg.
