Apprenticeship opportunities in the Indian Navy

    In addition to securing the coastal boundaries of the country, Indian Navy also conducts annual Trainee Apprenticeship programmes aimed at training young technicians in designated trades as per the Apprentices Act 1961. The training Indian Navy Apprenticeship programme is conducted by the Naval Dockyard Apprentices School across the country for different time periods depending upon the requirements by the organization. Despite being well advertised in different newspapers and employment news dallies as well as websites; the Indian Navy Apprenticeship programme is not very popular among the youth. Many refrain from joining this programme due to lack of clarity about eligibility criteria, age limit, physical standards required and no knowledge about the type of trades for which the apprenticeship programme is offered. To clear any doubts around the Navy Apprentice programme, we have compiled a comprehensive guide, detailing all the information about this scheme below:

    Navy Apprenticeship Announcements

    The Naval Apprentice opportunities are announced annually by the Naval Dockyard Apprentices School across the country. The notification is well advertised on the website of Indian Navy (nausena-bharti.nic.in) along with the publication of the same in leading dallies, employment newspapers and websites. The notification details all the important details about the apprenticeship programme, like application deadlines, positions open and respective eligibility criteria. 

    Type of Apprenticeship Positions

    The notification invites applications from eligible ITI / Diploma holders for selection in the One Year/ Two Year apprentice training in 14 designated trades.

    One-year Apprentice Training Programme is offered for following trades:

    • Electrician
    • Electronics Mechanic (Radio & TV)
    • Mason
    • IT & ESM Maintenance
    • Fitter
    • Turner
    • Instrument Mechanic
    • Machinist
    • Mechanic Machine Tool Maintenance (MMTM) (03 Yrs Training at respective ITI)
    • Painter
    • R & A/C Mechanic
    • Welder (Gas & Electric)

    Two-year Apprentice Training Programme is offered for following trades:

    Foundry Men /Moulder
    Mechanic (Diesel)
    Sheet Metal Worker
    Pipe Fitter / Plumber

    Age Limit

    As part of the Naval Apprenticeship programme notification, the Indian Navy announces the age eligibility criteria for different trades.


    Age Group

    General Category Candidates

    14 to 21 Years

    SC Category Candidates

    14 to 26 Years (5-year relaxation)

    ST Category Candidates

    14 to 26 Years (5-year relaxation)

    Children of Ex-servicemen

    2 years of upper age limit relaxation / 14 to 23 for General Category / 14 to 27 for SC category.

    The aforementioned age limits are often notified in terms of dates; therefore, candidates are advised to refer the official notification document in order to confirm the eligible age limit.

    Educational Qualifications

    Candidates interested in joining the Indian Navy apprenticeship course need to satisfy the following educational qualifications in order to be eligible for the training programme.

    Matriculation: Candidate must have cleared Class X/10/Matriculation examination with minimum aggregate of 50% marks in all subjects

    ITI: Candidate should also have completed ITI training in the respective trade with minimum 65% aggregate marks. The ITI degree should be awarded by an institute approved by National Council for Vocational Training.

    Physical Standards

    Apart from Age and educational qualification criteria, candidates also have to meet prescribed physical standards in order to be eligible for the apprenticeship programme.

    Minimum Height: 137 cm
    Minimum Weight: 25.4 Kg

    Selection Procedure

    The Indian Navy follows two-tier selection procedures for the Naval Apprenticeship programmes.

    State 1: At the initial stage, candidates are shortlisted on the basis of marks obtained in Matriculation and ITI examinations.
    Stage 2: Selected candidates appear for a written test followed by a personal interview.

    Salary / Stipend

    Candidates enrolled in the Naval apprenticeship programmes at the Naval Dockyard Schools are offered a nominal stipend as part of monetary compensation. Apprenticeship programmes from different trade backgrounds and different time durations, draw different levels of monetary compensations. Apart from this, different naval dockyard schools are also known to offer differing stipend to candidates as promulgated by GOI Gazette notification. Apart from this, naval schools are also known to revise the stipend rates regularly.
