Open Text Based Assessment (OTBA) was introduced by CBSE for students of IXth and XIth standard in March, 2014 examination with an aim to bring in a new learning process that emphasizes on teaching the theoretical concepts practically that will help in better understanding of the concepts and topics. Questions asked in the OTBA question paper are aimed at testing the Higher Order Thinking Skills of students, encouraging them to adopt an unconventional approach to solve the problems. The OTBA helps to analyze the extent to which the students have been able to grasp the concept. It evaluates the students' ability to think and apply the concepts to given problems and reach the suitable conclusion/solution to that problem.OTBA takes place only in Summative Assessment II. Every year CBSE provides the textual matter for the OTBA exams before commencing of the Assessment in all its affiliated schools.

Inside text material for OTBA class 9 Science 2017, there are two themes.
Theme – 1 is Solid Waste Management - How to bring best out of waste? & Theme – 2 is Healthy Environment, Healthy People.
Both themes start with brief points describing learning objectives of themes followed by a note for readers. Afterwards, text material for the theme is provided & then questions based on them are asked. Last but not the least marking scheme is also given with which students can understand what must be included in answers to get maximum marks.
