Ans. (i) The states of matter that can flow due to less intermolecular force of attraction and have no fixed shape, are called as fluids. For example: Liquids and gases.

(ii) Buoyant force: It is the upward force exerted by any fluid upon a body placed in it.

Q. List any three properties on the basis of which a colloidal solution can be recognized.

Ans. Following are the properties that can help distinguish a colloidal solution: (Write any three)

(i) The particles in a colloidal solution are too small to be viewed by naked eyes. These particles can be observed only through an ultra microsope.

(ii) Particles of a colloidal solution do not settle down when left undisturbed.

(iii) Colloidal solutions cannot be filtered using a filter paper.

(iv) Colloidal solution is heterogeneous a solution.

Q. How would you confirm that a colourless liquid given to you is pure water?

Ans. Pure water has a fixed boiling point of 100oC under standard atmospheric pressure. This fact can be used to confirm that a colourless liquid given to us is water as follows : We take the colourless liquid in a distillation flask fitted with a thermometer. Let us heat the flask with a gas burner till the liquid starts boiling. If all the colourless liquid distils over (or boils off) at the same temperature of 100oC, without leaving behind any residue in the distillation flask, it will be pure water.

Q. Name the adaptation of fish which helps it in each of the following:

(i) Swimming in water,

(ii) Breathing

Ans. (a) Streamlined body shape and fins helps the fish to swim in water

(b) Fish has developed special structures called gills which absorbs the dissolved oxygen in water and help it in breathing.
