All the fun trips to beaches, hill stations or even NASA or Disneyland that for long has been wrapped under the mattress of study tours would now finally come to an end. The Central Board of Secondary Education has ordered principals to make sure that these tours are organized only in a ‘need-only’ basis and only if the course curriculum demands the tour. A circular carrying the orders also carried the list of safety guidelines for any study tour for any school under CBSE.
The circular clearly mentions that the schools should at first ensure the fact that the tour which is being organized by the school is for the benefit of the students and is related to their course curriculum. The recent incidents like the Beas River in June which took toll of 24 engineering student lives, is seen one of the major reasons that the CBSE officials has taken these decisions and has summoned instructions to educational institutions. In the circular it also mentioned that the schools should inform the local district magistrate or other relevant authorities about the tours in advance if it is in places like dam sites, power plants and beaches, where there remains a danger if the safety measures are not taken up properly. The board also seemed unhappy by the prospect of foreign tours as par to the study tours in which very few children from selected families could only take part leaving behind the majority who can’t.
The circular has clearly chalked out safety measures that should be taken before any study tour with children of the schools. They should keep the parents or guardians in the loop about the visa procedures and travel itinerary, getting a no objection letter signed by them, a senior teacher should accompany the group and a lady teacher should be there in the group if there are any girls. The circular further asked the authorities to arrange for local tour operator who are aware of the situations and conditions of the place the tour is getting conducted and ordered teachers to keep the students abreast about the situations in case of any emergency that occur during the tour.
