Human Resource Development Minister, Smriti Irani, in a written reply to a question aroused in Lok Sabha said that two central universities Allahabad University and North Eastern Hill University have already started to give Wi-Fi facilities to its students under the Department of Electronics and Information Technology programme.
About the rest of the 38 central universities over the country, the government said it has approved the programme for the universities and soon the Wi-Fi facility would be rolled out to these universities as well. Irani said in the letter, “For the remaining 38 central universities, Project Approval Board of NMEICT in its 31st meeting has approved the proposal for providing Wi-Fi at the cost of Rs. 335.85 crore.
Connecting students of these central universities with the free Wi-Fi facilities would help taking a step forward to achieve the dream of digital India, enthusiastically put forward by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It would help students of the universities to connect to the pool of information available online and associated themselves with the academics from around the world.
Irani had also made it public recently that the books and learning materials of CBSE curricular would be made online for free for students around the country. It would be done as part of the centre’s good governance efforts. The announcement of making these resources online was made on 19 December at a function organized at the Kendriya Vidyalaya in East Delhi. She ensured that steps would be taken to ensure that the learning outcome of the students gets improved and holistic nurturing could be given to the students around the country.
