Taking the suggestion of the Higher Education Minister Pradeep Panigrahi, the central government has granted the proposal of Rama Devi Women’s College to be conferred university status. This would be the first Women University in Orissa. Along with this the proposal to make Khailikote College in Berhampur, a cluster university was also made, which got approved by the central government.
Rashtriya Ucchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) is a centrally sponsored body that accepted the Orissa government’s proposal and as a result Rama Devi Women’s College would now get university status and would be the first women university in the state. All the women colleges which are presently functioning under the administration of Utkal University would now come under the newly formed women’s university and all the proceedings and academics would be controlled from this university.
The Higher Education Minister of Orissa, Pradeep Panigrahi further added that the RUSA has also agreed to provide cluster university status to the Berhampur-based Khallikote Autonomous College, which is expected to further interest students to take part in higher education.
Under the RUSA for infrastructure development fund released by the central government, each of the new universities would get Rs 55 crore in the next three years. The state government has also decided to add further courses to these two new universities to help students get varied choices to opt for their higher studies.
