The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) this year, 2013 introduced the “other” as a gender choice for the candidates, along with the already available options being ‘male’ and ‘female’.
The reason being, that this category in the society has existed and the members didn’t wish to leave it out.
GATE which is a qualifying exam for pursuing M Tech and PhD programs at the Indian Institutes of Technology, Indian Institute of Science (Bangalore) and several other engineering colleges have already registered three of the thirty six candidates who claimed to belong to the ‘other’ gender.
The last date for filling the forms was 30 September 2012. The test was conducted online for 15 papers on January 20 and offline for six papers on February 10. IIT Bombay was the organizing institute for the exam this year, 2013.
