  1. Union Cabinet on 29 October 2014 approved the proposal to amend Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) policy in construction and real estate sectors. The proposals came in the backdrop of depleting FDI inflows in construction and real sector in last few years.
  2. The Union Finance Ministry on 27 October 2014 launched a dedicated website for Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana (PMJDY). The website will be available both in English and Hindi.
  3. The Kamarajar Port Ltd (KPL) on 28 October 2014 announced to set up a Free Trade and Warehousing Zone (FTWZ) on 100 acres, adjacent to its premises. Kamarajar port will became the first port on the eastern coast to set up FTWZ.


  1. English clarinet player Acker Bilk died on 2 November 2014 in Bath, southwestern England following a brief illness. He was 85.
  2. Fourth International Counter-Piracy Conference was held in Dubai from 29 – 30 October 2014. The theme of the Conference was Securing State Recovery: Sustaining Momentum at Sea, Confronting Instability Land.
  3. Rajiv Mehrishi on 31 October 2014 took charge as Union Finance Secretary under the Union Ministry of Finance. He was appointed as Secretary of Economic Affairs of Finance.
  4. All India Radio News Services Division on 29 October 2014 launched free SMS service in four more languages to provide news updates to people. Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar launched the service at a function in New Delhi. 
  5. Lokesh Chandra was appointed as chairman of India Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) on 27 October 2014. He was appointed by the President Pranab Mukherjee for a term of three years.
  6. Warren M Anderson, the former Chairman of Union Carbide Corporation who was blamed for the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy died. He was 92.

  6. Realty firm Emaar MGF Land Limited on 27 October 2014 tied up with payment gateway firm PayU India for providing an online payment facility to its customers.
  7. A group of 69 non-resident Indian investors on 28 October 2014 had sued ICICI Venture at the Supreme Court in Mauritius. 
  8. Telecom giant SoftBank of Japan on 27 October 2014 pledged to make an investment of 10 billion US dollars (over 60000 crore rupees) in India's IT and communications sector in coming years. 


  1. India and Saudi Arabia on 29 October 2014 agreed to cooperate in different areas of hydrocarbon sector. The areas include strategic reserves, petrochemical conservation, research and development, refineries and energy efficiency programmes. 
  2. Vice President of Zambia Guy Scott on 29 October 2014 was appointed as acting President by the Zambia government. Guy Scott, thus, became the first white leader of a sub-Saharan nation since F W de Klerk’s became the President of South Africa in May 1994.
  3. Malala Yousafzai won the 2014 World’s Children Prize on 29 October 2014 after a global vote involving millions of children. She received the prize at a ceremony in Mariestad near Stockholm. 
  4. China in October 2014 overtook the US to become the world’s largest economy in Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) terms. This was revealed by the October 2014 update of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
  5. India on 31 October 2014 voted against the provisions of UN draft resolution that called on all those countries including India that have not joined the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) to accede to it as non-nuclear weapon states.
  6. Sweden on 30 October 2014 became the first European Union (EU) country to officially recognise the State of Palestine.
  7. Deeper integration for peace and prosperity was chosen as the theme for the upcoming 18th SAARC Summit to be held in Kathmandu on 30 October 2014. The Summit is scheduled to be held on 26-27 November 2014 in Nepal. 
  8. India along with 20 other countries on 23 October 2014 signed an agreement to become the founding member of the China-backed Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).

  1. Central Zone won the 2014-15 Duleep Trophy title of cricket on 2 November 2014 by defeating South Zone in the finals played at Feroz Shah Kotla Ground, Delhi with 9 runs. This was the first Duleep title for Central zone in ten seasons and the narrowest win in the tournament’s history, in terms of runs.
  2. Pankaj Advani on 30 October 2014 won IBSF World Billiards Championship (Point Format) in Bangalore. He won by defeating Robert Hall of the UK with a score of 1928 – 893 in the finals. This is his 12th title in the Timed Format and third Grand double.
  3. Sachin Tendulkar, Indian batting legend and Steve Waugh, former Australian cricket captain entered Bradman Hall of Fame on 29 October 2014. The cricketers were inducted as the 2014 Bradman Honourees at a gala dinner held at the historic Sydney Cricket Ground.
  4. Serena Williams of the US on 26 October 2014 won the Singles title of BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore 2014. In the finals held at Singapore Indoor Stadium, she defeated Simona Halep of Romania 6-3, 6-0.
  5. Indian golfer Anirban Lahiri on 26 October 2014 won 900000 US dollar Venetian Macau Golf Open. This was his second title of the year and fifth career win on the Asian Tour.
  6. Sania Mirza of India and Cara Black of Zimbabwe on 26 October 2014 won the doubles title of the BNP Paribas Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Finals Singapore presented by SC Global. The winning Indian-Zimbabwean pair received 500000 US dollars as prize money. 
  7. Para-swimmer Sharath Gayakwad on 26 October 2014 broke the 28-year old record of P T Usha of winning the most medals at a multi-discipline event by an Indian. He achieved this feat at Asian Para Games in Incheon, South Korea.
