Group Discussion: Media sensationalizes news

Aug 8, 2014 18:11 IST

NEWS refers to North-East-West-South in general that depicts the information coming from all over the world covering every aspect of life and business in short anything and everything is being covered and reported to the people across the globe through various sources of Media. Be it Electronic Media using Television News channels or radio or or internet and Print Media using newspapers, journals, magazines etc.

    Media has mainly two forms:

    A) Print media- newspapers, journals, magazines.

    B) Digital / Electronic media - Television news channels, radio, internet etc.

And then it is the reporters and the entire Media team that avails news for all of us. Now it is that their discretion that they put forward the news to all the people across the world. And so it’s like that Media sensationalizes news. Favoring the topic we may say that:

    1. Human nature can’t be changed: We are normal human beings with a sheer human nature of getting involved in any news or information only when it seems to be really sensational and serious. Media works upon making the news available for us. Now if media doesn’t sensationalize the news it won’t be taken for seriously by the people for whom it is essential.

    2. Media has to take care of even those people who are illiterate and live in remote areas: Since, in our nation more than 60% of the population lives in villages and mostly they are illiterate so the best way they can get informed is by sensationalization of news and that is very well incorporated by media.

    3. Marketing and branding due to more competition: As of now there are many media channels and sources that are in tough competition with one another like: AAJ TAK, STAR NEWS, SAHARA NEWS,DD NEWS, NDTV NEWS etc and everyone has equal amount of information to be delivered in the form of a news to the masses and so it automatically becomes essential for these news channels or media to sensationalize the news in different and unique ways so that they can hold the market and stand in the competition.

    4. Random figures and abrupt data to gain focus and attention: One of the best examples of Media sensationalizing news is that they provide abrupt figures and random data that hardly shows any resemblance to the fact of incidence. This happens mostly in case of disasters, accidents, any event that affects and involves the huge number of masses and every news channel and media people come up with different figures ans structures. So, this is nothing but sensationalization.

On the contrary, if we closely look at the way news is being presented and delivered we may deny the statement saying Media sensationalizes news as due to the reasons that follows:

1)True and apt information: Media persons know the fact that howsoever clever they might be but befooling customers will be like a suicide attempt and they never would take the risk and that’s the reason why they focus more on facilitating apt and true information than faking or sensationalizing.

2)Information sharing to masses: Moreover, what media primarily focuses upon is the achievement of sharing and delivering the information and news to the masses irrespective of the way it does so. And most of the times sensationalization is hardly required.

3)Media presents the news in a way that it’s purpose is served: Media doesn’t sensationalize the news rather it’s the way of presentation to attract the customers and serve the purpose as their prime target is to make the people around the world informed and updated about what is going in and around. That is therefore not sensationalized but presented properly.
