Gujarat government grants 100cr for Universities makeover
Gujarat government granted Rs 100 crores to Universities of its state to undergo repair and renovation. It was a mutual decision taken by all Registrars of the State when funds were being allocated for new buildings but no capital was being granted for maintenance of the existing ones.
Ahmedabad: Gujarat government allotted Rs. 100 crores for the renovation of infrastructure of Universities in the State. The decision was taken by all the Registrars of the state.
Higher education department held a meeting with registrars of the eight universities and the government was informed that the University Grants Commission was allocating funds for the construction of new buildings but renovation and repair amongst these were being given a backseat in the budget.
Hence, the state government formed a committee with representatives from Gujarat University, M S University and Saurashtra University. The committee will also have the education secretary and finance secretary as members. The government has said that the committee will scan every proposal and will allocate funds from the Rs 100 crore.
The allocated funds will have to be utilized before March 31, 2015. Officials said that at very least, the work orders will have to be issued before March 31.
The government made it clear that there would be no approval for maintenance of fountains or gardens under this grant.
The next meeting of the committee is scheduled for Tuesday.
