Mental and Physical health during college

Scoring well in exams requires a lot more effort than just memorizing up the syllabus. You need to be physically and mentally healthy to be able to perform better, more so in college where there are so many other things to take care of. Consecutive classes, coupled with extracurricular activities will make life tougher than school where you at least had a schedule laid out to you by somebody else. With the tips mentioned below, you can keep your body and mind healthy and active to concentrate better and learn more.

    Eating/food habits

It's a fact that you need to have healthy food so that your body functions properly. Students often make the mistake of skipping breakfast because they do not attach a lot of importance to it. This is a big mistake in terms of following healthy diet habits. Eating heavy breakfast gives you the energy to go through the most productive hours of the day without getting tired.

    Junk food

Having junk food seems like a good idea because it's tasty and easily available in the market. Plus, you don't have to put in much effort to get the food. However, junk food is not good for health because of the preservatives added to prevent it from getting stale. It also rarely has any nutrients and just contributes to weight gain and many heart related diseases along-with obesity.

70 per cent of the human body is made of water so it only makes sense to keep it well hydrated. Drink lots of water and if you are not able to do that, take liquid in other forms such as juice and buttermilk. Not only do liquids keep the body hydrated but also help in digestion and make your skin glow more.

    Good sleeping habits

It's never a good idea to lose out on sleep for completing the syllabus. Keep studying regularly throughout the semester so that you don't have everything piled for the last moment. Getting at least 7 hours of sleep is essential for any adult individual and you must also strive for that. When we sleep, the body rebuilds itself and prepares for proper development. If you have problem in finding sleep, here are the things you can do to sleep like a baby:

    • Take a nice warm bath or shower in the evening
    • Use a suitable pillow
    • Dim the light exposure of your bedroom for an hour or two before going to bed
    • Eat dinner at least three hours before bedtime
    • Avoid going to bed on an empty stomach
    • Avoid caffeine in the afternoon and evening

Doing exercise is a health booster

Exercising increases the flow of blood in the body and hence helps you in staying fit and healthy. It also helps you to stay fit, improves the health of your heart, strengthens immune system, prevents cancer and has neurobiological effects. It increases the flow of blood in the body, thus resulting in better transmission of oxygen through the body. The tiredness resulting from exercising also helps in sleeping well. As a student, exercising should be part of your routine. If you don't like regular exercises, you can go for swimming or play a sport which requires a lot of physical activity. Below are four things you should keep in mind while exercising:

    • Wear the right kind of clothes.
    • Wear the right shoes so that your feet don't start hurting.
    • Hydrate yourself so that you don't feel weak.
    • Do warm up exercises so that your muscles do not get strained.

Personal hygiene tips to keep illness at bay

As you are always surrounded by a group of people during college, you don’t know when and how you may get infected through contagious diseases. First thing first! Learn to take care of your personal hygiene at the first place as that’s the first step to maintain a sound health. These following tips will help you to keep illness far away from you:

    • Wash your hands any time after you have been around people who are sick. Also, make sure to wash your hands properly before eating something. This simple step will prevent you from most of the diseases.
    • Avoid sharing beverages with your friends as germs easily spread through sharing of soft drinks and juice.
    • If your hands are not clean, don’t touch your nose, mouth or eyes as the membranes in these areas are an easy gateway for viruses and bacteria.
    • Make sure to get vaccinated from time-to-time to stay away from seasonal flu.

Improve your mental health to stay fit and happy

Believe it or not, almost every second disease on earth starts at the mental level. Stress, depression and anxiety are the major factors of heart related diseases. So, it’s high time to keep yourself mentally fit in order to lead a healthy and happy life. Here are some tips to boost your mental health:

    • Don’t let the stress factor get over you as it may result in depression. If at any point of time you feel stressed, make sure to take a break from studies and give yourself the time to relax.
    • The harsh fact of life is that you can’t make everyone happy. Therefore, it’s better to keep yourself happy at the first at the first place and concern about others. However, that’s doesn’t mean you need to turn to a selfish person. You just need to concentrate and keep your needs in priority.
    • Rather than concentrating too much on your faults, try to rectify them, and feel great by doing the work that you love. This will not only build your confidence but also help you to let go off the stress factor.

These were the essentials of maintaining a good health for a college student. Your body is your temple and you must treat it like that. Eating healthy and taking proper rest so that it can recover from wear and tear is essential and of utmost importance.
