We all have put off a task at some point in our life. There are many reasons for leaving that work for later on. One possibility is that you are busy with some other important project while the another one could be that you are simply idling away your time. For example, suppose you have an assignment submission deadline approaching in college. However, instead of working you kill your time by checking emails or social media profiles, watching videos, playing video games etc. This is quite a common phenomenon seen among students. Procrastination does nothing but waste our time making us put off an important task for later. Procrastinating to a certain extent is fine. But when it becomes a regular habit it can lead to serious complications and problems for the person. You can easily avoid procrastination following some of the steps mentioned below.

Break work into smaller tasks

Procrastination usually occurs when a task seems overbearing to us. The best way to overcome the problem then is to break it into smaller parts and achieve them one part at a time. For example, if you have to write an essay for college. Break it into different phases, first researching the topics, outlining them, drafting the content, writing the report and finally proofreading it before submitting. If you look at each of these steps individually it's a lot easier to achieve them than when you look at them as a whole. The trick here is to focus on the immediate phase and getting it done to the best of your ability.  

Change your environment

Working for too long in the same environment also has an impact on your productivity. If a place is making you feel disinterested, sleepy or distracted then maybe, it's time to make some changes to your study space. You could replace something in or around your study space or even change the location altogether. Depends on what works the best for you. What's important is that the environment should make you feel inspired and focused on your studies.

Plan Meticulously

One of the major reasons for our failure to complete a task on time is our inability to manage our time efficiently. Time management is one of the essential skills for a college student to posses for him to avoid procrastination. Sometimes, we deliberately postpone things with the belief that a little delay won't make any difference. But when these little things pile up they form a major part of fast-approaching deadlines and a big pile of incomplete tasks. Leading to unnecessary problems such as that of stress.


Set Realistic Goals

One of the major causes of procrastination is setting unrealistic goals and targets. When making your schedule always be careful of the time you allocate for a particular task. Most tasks take longer than the time estimate that we set for them. So, make sure to keep aside a few extra days than your actual estimated time for task completion. Like, for example, there is an assignment that you have to submit by the end of this month and you estimate that it will take you about 10 days to complete the project. But when entering it into your schedule you should allocate about 12-13 day for it, in case it takes you some extra time than what you originally thought. 

Avoid Making Excuses for everything

When you commit yourself to a task make sure that you do it wholeheartedly. Once committed there should be no space for any excuses. All you need to get a task done is the focus and the will to take action on the thing. No matter how much you strategize, plan or make hypothesis about it, it would all amount to nothing as long as you don't start with the task and finish it.
