Ministry of Human Resource Development is considering the launch of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) platform ‘Swayam’ in the country on 15 August, 2016. Swayam would host over 2000 courses, which would cater to over 3 crore students across the country. The preparations for the launch are in its full swing. The special ceremony of the launch is expected to be attended by the Prime Minister Narendara Modi.
According to a source close to Ministry, “The preparations for the project are on in full swing. The project has the capacity to revolutionize the education system. It is expected to be launched by the Prime Minister on 15 August.” Though this information technology platform the students would be able to acquire high quality education on various courses and subjects from school level to Post graduate level online. A total of 2000 courses would be on offer through the portal. The network that is backing up the platform is capable of handling 10 lakh concurrent users at any point of time from around the country. The motif of this portal is to provide free and effective education to the youth of the nation online. High quality e-content would be provided through the courses, drafting of which has been already finalized. Microsoft has been roped in as technological partner by the ministry of HRD for the programme.
According to officials in the ministry, “When completed, it would bring in interactive e-content on MOOCs format of more than 2.5 lakh hours which would make it the world’s biggest repository of interactive learning resource under a single window. This would allow any student in the country to take the courses offered by the best teachers on Swayam, especially bridging the academic deficit experience in the backward areas and helping raise standards of education.”
