Q.  The proposed reviewing of Indus Water Treaty has fraught major water security implications for the countries in the region. Examine and Critically Evaluate in the light of the fact that India needs to safeguard its own Geostrategic interests.

In the global era of multipolarity, interdependency, contradictions, compromises and pressures, unanimaclly scrapping a historic and successful Indus treaty would be futile for India’s susceptible strategic position. Although the review of Indus treaty with Pakistan come as a knee-jerk reaction of the recent Uri-terror attracts in India but India need to evaluate the repercussions of blocking cross border rivers being a lower riparian state itself. Consider the following point on dealing with Indus treaty:

1. The historic Indus water treaty is seen as a cornerstone of peaceful cooperation in water sharing around the world and withdrawing from this would lead to losing international credibility in global agreements and can have adverse spillover effect on other water sharing pacts in south-Asia.

2. Any hardliner decision to use water as a weapon to settle regional equations with Pakistan will be back fired in the similar fashion by other upper riparian states in our neighborhood as seen recently china blocking the Brahmaputra tributary flow to India.

Therefore, it’s more judicious for India to optimize the maximum use of water within the framework of Indus water treaty and subjugate Pakistan’s influence, India can use it soft diplomacy to gain support of major world powers and diplomatically isolate Pakistan as seen recently in the model of “SAARC MINUS PAKISTAN”.

On an even stringent outlook India might use hard power like surgical strikes to combat terror camps operating in the Pakistan occupied regions responsible for planning terrorist activities in the south and central Asian region.
The need of an hour is to practice smart diplomacy by alienating Pakistan via economic sanctions by major powers and develop global pressure on Pakistan to destroy any insurgent and illegitimate terrorist activity birthing in its territory.
