IAS Prelims 2016 : History of India : Syllabus Analysis

This article provides syllabus analysis for 'History of India' section of IAS Prelims Exam.

This section of IAS Prelims Exam GS Paper I Syllabus comprises questions from Indian art, culture and from Ancient, Medieval and Modern Indian History. In 2014 around 20 questions and in 2015 around 10 questions were asked from this section of the syllabus.

In the last 2 years, questions related to Indian art and culture have been asked from number of topics. These topics include Indus Valley Civilization, Bhakti movement, Sufi movement, Buddhism, Jainism, Indian philosophical schools, Indian architecture, Indian sculpture, Indian dances, Indian music, Indian languages, Indian theatre, etc. The questions were moderate to tough in their difficulty level. 

Questions related to topic of culture were multifarious and broad so every topic cannot be covered in detail. Candidates can go through previous years’ question papers of IAS Prelims Exam and prepare accordingly. While studying Ancient and Medieval Indian History candidates should focus on the art and cultural aspects.

Questions from Modern Indian History are more frequently asked as compared to Ancient and Medieval Indian History. The syllabus of Ancient and Medieval Indian history is very vast. So candidates need to understand the relative importance of various topics and give more time to important topics. Important topics that should be covered from Ancient India comprises Pre-historic period, Indus Valley Civilization, Vedic India and Mauryan and Gupta period. Important topics for Medieval Indian History are Vijayanagara Kingdom, Delhi Sultanate, Mughal Empire and Advent of Europeans. Candidates should emphasize on art and cultural achievements during different phases of Ancient and Medieval Indian History.

However, Modern Indian History should be studied extensively and thoroughly as it is important for both Prelims and Main Exams.  Modern Indian History should be covered from the middle of eighteenth century to present times. Special emphasis should be given to the National Movement, prominent personalities and significant events.
