IGNOU to be Reviewed by Ministry of HRD

Oct 31, 2014 18:10 IST

Indira Gandhi National Open University(IGNOU) is about to get reviewed by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) due to its mounting allegations regarding administrative mismanagement and other educational issues for quite some time. Vice Chancellor of Central University of Gujarat Syed Bari is asked to look into the heap of allegations that are stamped against the IGNOU administration and its Vice Chancellor Mohammad Aslam.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee too has taken the allegations about the university quite seriously and is maintaining a critical view towards the university. Off late, IGNOU has remained in news for all the wrong reasons. After the suspension of the Community College Scheme ran by IGNOU, nearly three lakh personnel of the armed forces suffered and were debarred from getting certificates and diplomas in various courses. Before this there was a jinx over the discontinuation of the ISRO Chairperson that undertook the research in related fields citing lack of funds. The decision to discontinue chairs like CV Raman Chair for Science Education, Mother Teresa chair for social work, UNESCO chair for technology and e-governance and the Vishveswarya Chair for work in education linkages were also announced by the IGNOU authorities which raised eyebrows. According to Aslam these chairs were discontinued due to lack of sponsors, whereas there are newspaper reports suggesting that IGNOU is not using the funds for many other chairs which are already released by the Government earlier.

As the All India Radio taken off air all 37 Gyanvani education FM Radio stations, after the university allegedly failed to clear the huge amount of dues to the body, many students lost their informal way of studying thorough those radio channels. Thousands of students who were pursuing education through such non-formal channels were shocked to hear about the retrieval. Many of the appointments to quite a few chairs has not been made yet after Aslam took over as Vice-Chancellor in March 2013, and many other allegations are stamped to the present VC. Ministry of HRD is about to undergo all this and prepare a report of IGNOU soon.
