Starting 2013, the IIITs can now admit foreign students directly now. Over two thousand one hundred and eighty seats in thirty seven institutions across India have been opened for direct admission of foreign students with central government introducing direct admission of students abroad scheme.
The DASA scheme introduced by the Ministry of Human Resource Development will solely cater to foreign nationals, persons of Indian Origin and NRIs for undergraduate programs in engineering and architecture stream.
The scheme is applicable to all the centrally institutions, including the IIITs, the NITs and the other premier CFTIs (Centrally funded technical institutes).
The National Institute of Technology-Karnataka, Surathkal, is the coordinating agency for admissions under the scheme in 2013.
The admission process was launched on 1 April 2013 and all applications must be submitted online by 25 May 2013. Students who have secured a 6.75 GPA or 60% aggregate marks can apply for the thirty nine courses that are on offer. A minimum score of 1,440 on the SAT is required.
