IIT Kharagpur, the premium institute has planned to establish a medical hospital on their campus. The hospital has a capacity of 4oo bed for that 45-acre plot has been allotted at the south-east-end of the campus. The construction is scheduled after Durga Puja. IIT-Kgp will be the first technical institute which also offers medical course.
IIT-Kgp have selected enterprise of public sector to accomplish this project, HSCC which offers professional advices in health sector of government as well as private hospitals. S K Som, director of the institute said that the project on its way of finalizing the architect who will construct the structure plan as per the civil construction cell of the institute.
The institute offers a master’s degree program in medical technology that has already grabbed huge attraction across the country. The plan of establishing an undergraduate medical program recognized by MCI takes almost five years as it met legal as well as technical issues however now it is all set to be executed. The issues generated because IITs comes under the ministry of human resources development while medical courses are run by the Medical Council of India that comes under health ministry.
He added that they have educational and medical tie-ups with AIIMS along with some international collaboration such as the John Hopkins University - the leading university in the US for bio-medical research, medicine and genetics with whom conversation over possible tie-up was held.
The budget of the complete project is Rs. 230 crore where the Centre will provide help of Rs. 150 crore and the rest will be arranged by the institute. Rs 75 crore has been already sent by the Centre as initial cost.
