IIT Kharagpur would now bring in professors and scholars from offshore universities and offer joint PhDs to the students in India with tie ups with international institutes. Under Shri Gopal Rajgrahia International Programme, at least 10 professors from various leading universities would come to IIT Kharagpur every year for few months to teach the students in the campus. Along with the professors there would be 30 talented international scholars who would be invited each year to conduct research activities at the IIT campus.
The university is in talks with leading universities in US, Europe, Australia and Japan. Under this joint PhD programme, the PhD degrees would be awarded jointly by IIT Kharagpur and any leading international university.
The Director of IIT, Partha Pratim Chakrabarti said, “The students will study at both the places. There will be international workshops and activities with the foreign university.” The programme is scheduled to begin from January session in the next year. Gopal Rajagarhia, who is an esteemed alumni of 1986 batch, has donated Rs. 10 crore as funds for the initiative and thus the programme is named before him.
Rajgarhia said, "I was always keen to give it back to IIT. Its international ratings are poor because of low international exposure. With this program, we want the IIT to make its presence felt in the international arena so that its ranking improves as per our Vision 2020,"
The IIT awards around 200 PhD degrees each year and the director of the IIT is planning to take around 25 percent of the PhDs to be joint PhDs. There would be foreign students as well who would study here in the IIT Kharagpur campus under the joint PhD programme. The IIT-Kgp has already started the International Summer Winter Programme where students and faculties from India and abroad participate each year.
