The Indian Institute of Technology - Kanpur has launched a new department dedicated to Earth Sciences. Named as Department of Earth Sciences, this department will be headed by Professor Rajiv Sinha, informed the Director of IIT-Kanpur, Prof Indranil Manna. Prof Sinha has been appointed as Head of the Department (ES) for a period of three years with immediate effect.
The Academic Senate proposed for the establishment of this department in a meeting held on 18 December 2013, and the proposal was approved by board of governors in its meeting on 30 December 2013.
Prof Manna further revealed that the entire non-teaching staff, space, laboratory, equipments and faculty of Geosciences Group of Civil Engineering Department of the Institute has been transferred to this new ES Department.
The purpose behind setting up of this department is creating a new breed of geoscientists in the country who would seek interdisciplinary solutions to earth science problems, said the director.
The ES Department at IIT-Kanpur will have its focus on the study of the earth, which entails the researches and studies on the evolution and internal dynamics of Earth and its surface processes emphasizing natural and human-induced transformations of terrestrial environment.
