Income tax inspector is one of the most reputed, lucrative and demanding post under SSC CGL. It offers you exceptional social status, timely promotion and a good professional satisfaction, which makes it a highly prestigious position to enter. It is a Grade-‘C’ job offering you a salary under Rs. 9,300-34,800 pay scale excluding dearness allowance, House rent allowance, Petrol allowance & mobile allowance under the department of Central Board of Direct Taxes, which is responsible for the collection of direct taxes.
As an Income tax inspector, you have to undertake both desk and field responsibility. There are basically two separate sections for your post.
In Assessment section, you are supposed to carry out all the desk activities including handling tax refund claims and TDS related queries. Your job is to take care of the assessment of Income tax of a person or a company.
In Non-assessment section, you are entitled to the field activities including raids. The job profile might appear very interesting but too risky sometimes. But, it does not mean that you are not supposed to perform the desk activities. The desk activity is limited to gather intelligence and proper evidence against possible tax evaders.
Hence, to carry out theresponsibilities and avail the facilities offered under this post, you have to go through the training after getting selection in SSC CGL.
SSC Income tax Inspector: Training Particulars
Before the deputation as Income tax inspector, you have to go through the rigorous training at DTRTI (Direct taxes regional training institutes), which are located at 10 cities in distinct regions. The training will be of 3 months in total including non-working days also. Until the final result or before joining the department, the training period may be extended to 6 months. The training will be extensive and time consuming in which you will receive the training in Financial accounting & Advance accounting including double entry system, capital & revenue expenditure, preparation of trial balance and final accounts.

There are ten training institutes set under the banner of DTRTI located at Mumbai, Lucknow, Kolkata, Hazaribagh, Delhi, Chennai, Chandigarh, Bhopal, Bangalore and Ahmedabad. These training institutes are equipped with the latest technology and advanced training methods for training the government personnel.
The Direct Taxes Regional Training Institute, Mumbai DTRTI, is a unit of the National Academy of Direct Taxes NADT and was established in 1973. It was established to meet the training needs of officers and officials working in Mumbai, Maharashtra & Gujarat. The objective of the Institute is to empower the Officers / Officials to optimize performance at all levels. Training is provided in an ambience that is conducive to knowledge & skill development. The Institute is engaged in the task of imparting training to various grades of officers/officials of the Income Tax Department, from the level of Inspectors to Addl. /Joint Commissioners of Income Tax.
Established in the year 1973, the Direct Taxes Regional Training Institute, Kolkata is engaged in the task of imparting training to the Officers of the Department. The institute conducts in-service training programs in the form of Core Courses, Orientations Courses, Crash Courses, and Special Courses for the training population spread over the States of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha, Tripura, West Bengal, Sikkim, and U.T. of Andaman & Nicober Islands besides organizing training to the doorsteps of the trainees at different outstation venues.
DTRTI Chennai was created in 2003 having jurisdiction over Tamilnadu and Kerala.
The DTRTI, Chandigarh has been mandated to conduct training courses for Group A to Group D officers and officials of Income Tax Department posted in the states of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir, Delhi, and Union territory of Chandigarh. It is headed by an officer of the level of Commissioner of Income Tax and has combined sanctioned strength of 6 Group A level officers, 6 Group B officers and about 32 Group C and D officials.
Direct Taxes Regional Training Institute, Bangalore is the training arm of the Income-tax Department. It functions under the aegis of National Academy of Direct Taxes, Nagpur. DTRTI had its humble origin in 1973 at Bangalore. The jurisdiction of DTRTI spanned across four states covering Karnataka, Goa, and Andhra Pradesh & Telangana.
DTRTI, Ahmedabad came into existence on 3rdSeptember, 2001 and later confirmed by the CBDT on 11thDecember, 2003. The training program included 60 working days’ Induction Course for Newly Recruited Inspectors, 10 working days’ Orientation course for Newly Promoted Inspectors, specialized courses on Investigation techniques and assessment, Basics of Computer and ITD applications for Inspectors.
