    New Delhi, March 21: Jagranjosh.com hosted an education forum to felicitate a discussion on the challenges that India’s higher education faces and opportunities that can help overcome them. Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar graced the event as the chief guest and delivered the keynote address highlighting government’s initiatives towards higher education sector. He was also joined by the versatile entertainer Mr Shekhar Sumar as part of the event, which was held at Taj Palace Hotel in New Delhi.

    While addressing the event, Mr Javadekar stressed on the power of the digital medium, especially in the education sector. He said that the current government is the first to recognize the immense potential of this medium and has ushered a revolution through the various governmental initiatives. Quoting the example of the Swayam programme, the minister reiterated the government’s commitment to employing digital technology to make quality education more accessible and affordable to lakhs of students across India.

    Mr Javadekar also said that quality and autonomy are the two pillars which are driving the on-going transformation of the higher education sector in India. To ensure quality education in higher educational institutions, the Government of India has taken a historic step of granting autonomy to over 60 higher educational institutions.

    He said that a total of 60 institutes have been granted academic autonomy including 52 Universities i.e. 5 central universities, 21 state universities, 24 deemed universities, and 2 private universities. MHRD’s this move is expected to empower the higher educational institutes to develop contemporary courses with industry-centric curriculum.

    The keynote address was followed by a panel discussion led by the versatile entertainer Mr Shekhar Suman  who was joined by eminent educationists from the industry. The panel discussion focused on the challenges faced by the Higher Education Sector in India.

    Mr Suman delivered the opening remarks of the panel discussion by stressing on the purpose of education and how it has transformed over the years. He suggested that the primary goal of higher education is to enable a student to be a better human being and in turn lay the foundation of a better society.

    Other panellists also contributed by highlighting several challenges that India’s higher education sector faces today. The debate was centred on topics such as employability of qualified students, cost of higher education in India, transparency in the education sector and many others on which the panellists shared their views and offered several innovative solutions to tackle them.

    While concluding the panel discussion, Mr Suman summarized the discussion stating that transformation of higher education should be a joint effort of all the stakeholders which include the Government, the educationists as well as the students and parents.
