Generally, JEE aspirants are not aware about how is the JEE Main percentile different from percentage of marks. Earlier, JAB followed a 60:40 criteria to calculate rank list but it has been removed with effect from JEE Main 2017. Here we will discuss how is JEE main percentile is calculated and how it is different from percentage of marks.

What is percentage and percentile? How is percentile score calculated?

  • Percentage is calculated on basis of you marks out of 100 for each subject
  • Percentile marks of a candidate in a Board or JEE (Main) reflect how many Candidates have scored below that candidate in his/her Board or JEE (Main) Examination
  • Percentile score determines a value below which a certain percent of observations follow
  • For example, the 40th Percentile is the value and score below 40 Percent or below are the observations to be found
  • The Percentile of a Candidate will be calculated as:

100X Number of Candidates in the ‘group’ with aggregate marks less than the candidate scoring the highest marks
___________________________________________________________________
Total number of candidates in the ‘group’

Example:

If in an education board- No of Candidates Registered are 13918 and No of Candidates Appeared for the exams are 13711

Then, the percentile score will be calculated as mentioned below –

1. A candidate who has scored 60% marks in that board and 6865 candidates have scored below him;

Percentile score for 60% marks in the Board – 6865*100/13711 = 50.07%

2. A Candidate scored 90% marks in the board exams and 13615 candidates have scored below 90%;

Percentile score for 90% marks in the Board – 13615*100/13711 = 99.30%

This is the difference between percentage of marks obtained by a candidate (60% or 90%) and the percentile score (50.07 or 99.30).

For calculation of JEE Main score of paper 1 (B.E./B. Tech.) and paper 2 (B. Arch./B. Planning), five subjects will be considered i.e.

  1. Language,
  2. Physics,
  3. Mathematics
  4. Chemistry/Biology/Biotechnology/Technical Vocational Subject
  5. Any other subject.

If a candidate has appeared in 6 subjects, then for additional subject i.e. 5th subject, the subjects with more marks will be considered

For calculation of JEE Main score of paper 2 (B. Arch. /B. Planning) – The marks obtained by candidates in Mathematics and any one of the four subjects in exam will be considered.

If a candidate has appeared in the qualifying exam in 2017 but is reappearing for class 12 qualifying exam in 2018, then the best subjects from both attempts of class 12 board exams will be considered for JEE percentile score calculation. Same will be done in case of Improvement exam candidates.

Important Points for Percentile Scores –

  • In the percentile system, the aggregate marks of all five subjects obtained as their mark sheet of a particular year i.e. 2016/2017/2018 are required in JEE Main 2018 as well as for next level i.e. JEE Advanced. Note: The marks from two different years (i.e. marks for 3 subjects from year 2017 and marks for other 2 subjects from 2018) mark-sheets cannot be considered for percentile calculation
  • The weightage of normalized qualifying examination marks is only for deciding ranking of JEE (Main) which will be used for admission to all Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs)/ NITs/IIITs but not for admissions in IITs
  • The candidates who are appearing in the improvement examination to improve their qualifying examination marks will get only one chance to inform the exam conducting body JAB about consideration of marks for any particular year for calculation of their ranks.
