The premier Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has been awarded the status of University with Potential for Excellence (UPE) by the University Grant Commission (UGC), which incurs the University a UGC grant of Rs 60 crore to work towards focused research and infrastructure development.
The UGC on 01 April 2014 wrote a letter to JNU, saying the grant is to be used for two major research areas - life sciences, and social sciences and humanities.
The letter also said that a part of the fund is also to be used for the development of infrastructure including setting up of research laboratories.
The university is also supposed to make use of the funds for improving the instrumentation facilities, library upgradation, network connectivity, outreach programmes, said vice chancellor, S K Sopory. Apart from these, a part of the grant will also be utilized to support participation of its faculties and students in national and international conferences, said Sopory.
