The Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) and University Grants Commission (UGC) conduct the Joint CSIR UGC NET for appointment of Lecturers in colleges and universities and for award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in the faculty of Science. The test is held twice a year in the month of June and December in 6 subjects across various centres in the country.
The Joint CSIR UGC NET will comprise of three papers that consists of objective type Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ). While Paper A is common to all subjects and comprises of 20 questions on General Aptitude; Paper B and C consists of subject-related conventional MCQs wherein Paper C will have analytical questions of higher value that may test the candidate's knowledge and/or application of scientific concepts. For every wrong answer, 1/4 marks will be deducted.

Note: From December 2012 onwards, a 6th paper in Engineering Sciences is included for engineering graduates to pursue PhD/ Lectureship. The paper is common for all Engineering disciplines who have completed their BE/ BTech or equivalent in Engineering with minimum 50% marks (50% for SC/ ST/ PH/ VH).

Basic principles of stratigraphy. Theories about the origin of life and the nature of fossil record. Earth's gravity and magnetic fields
and its thernnal structure: Concept of Geoid and. spheroid: Isostasy.
