Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has recently signed a memorandum of collaboration with the IIT, Kharagpur to achieve self-reliance in select defence technologies by incorporating themselves in the field of joint research.
DRDO Director General Dr. S. Christopher signed the memorandum with a goal to facilitate research and training in areas of mutual interest of the institute and the DRDO. The organization would provide resources needed for the research work and work in tandem with the institute. Under the collaboration there would be collaborative research and academic programme exchange taking place. This would further meet the requirements of the futuristic defence technological requirements and would be a helping hand to the overall development and strength building of the national defence.
By virtue of advanced training and exchange of knowledge the collaboration is expected to enhance the quality of human resource and manpower for the future development of the defence mechanism in the country. Under the collaboration there would be research taking place over cyber physical systems, information security, life science, energy storage devices and materials and underwater vehicles. There would be basic and applied research initiatives launched which would have a goal to achieve self-reliance in selected defence technologies. This is expected to give strength to the production and sustainability of the defence vehicles and overall mechanism.
There would also be bilateral mobility of faculty members, researchers and sharing of students over various programmes that would take place between the two bodies under the collaboration. There would resource sharing that would take place in regular interval between the two bodies making it a repository of information and talent.
