Manav Rachna to Honour Excellence in Industry and Sports in memory of Founder Father Dr O.P. Bhalla who believed in the inherent greatness of man!
In its ceaseless commitment towards Academic Excellence and Quality Education, Manav Rachna Educational Institutions (MREI) has been assiduously carrying forward the legacy of Founder Visionary Dr O.P. Bhalla who believed in the mantra of ‘creating better human beings’. What better way to pay tribute to his missionary zeal than to institute the first-of-its-kind ‘Manav Rachna Excellence Award-2017’ (MREA 2017) in a glittering ceremony that would honour some of the greatest minds in the world of Industry and Sports on 2nd April 2017. In an India driven by innovations, enterprise and boundless creativity, the Awards in memory of Manav Rachna’s Founder Father Dr O.P. Bhalla would undoubtedly inspire young minds to take India to unprecedented heights of glory.
The premier MREA 2017 ceremony will be hosted by Manav Rachna on the second and final day of the ‘National Conference on Autonomy of Education’ where the Chief Guest on the august occasion would be Honourable Governor of Haryana, Shri Kaptan Singh Solanki. The Five Stalwarts who would be honoured for the first time on a single platform in what is poised to be a milestone event in Manav Rachna’s 20 year sojourn, are none other than Shri Rajan Nanda: Chairman & MD Escorts Group for Lifetime Achievement; Shri R.C. Bhargava: Chairman Maruti Suzuki for National Building; Shri Dinesh Kumar Sarraf: Chairman & MD, ONGC for Corporate & Industry; Ms Shradha Suri: MD, Subros Group for Young Leader and Ms. Pusarla Venkata Sindhu for her exemplary contribution as ‘the Sports Icon of India’. Many see this momentous occasion as history in the making!
In the run up to the event, a Search Committee headed by Padma Shri Dr Pritam Singh held a meeting which was attended by the who’s who of the industry and academia, most notably Mr S.K. Roongta (Former Chairman, Steel Authority of India); Mr S.Y. Siddiqui (Chief Mentor, Maruti Suzuki); Prof. Dr Anand Prakash (Dean, International Relations—Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Delhi); Dr Umesh Rai (Professor, Department of Zoology, University of Delhi) and Dr Sanjay Srivastava (MD, Manav Rachna Educational Institutions). As per the deliberations of the committee members, awardees were primarily decided by the opinion polls of a sample consisting of 700 stakeholders. The Search Committee, post the deliberation of the results of the opinion polls and the achievements of the concerned candidates finally agreed upon and recommended the nominees for the award of Manav Rachna Excellence Award-2017.
While the stage is all set for d-day, here is a glimpse of the Thought Leaders and Icons who have made a big difference to the country’s progress:
Shri Rajan Nanda, Chairman & MD Escorts Group: A pragmatic leader, a magnetic entrepreneur and a magnanimous personality, he has over four decades of experience in the engineering and manufacturing sector and has played a defining role in establishing Escorts as an organization of repute. He took over the reins of Escorts Group as its Chairman in 1994 and has been actively involved in every aspect of the Company’s management. A forward looking and perceptive leader, Mr. Nanda has navigated the company in times of unprecedented challenges in the economy.
His perceptive guidance has resulted in giving Escorts a laser sharp focus in the heavy growth economy sectors of agricultural machinery, construction equipment and railway equipment. He has also been an active member of several apex trade and industry bodies including Confederation of Indian Industry.
An endearing personality, he continues to be a perpetual source of inspiration and strength to those who look up to him. Shri Nanda’s keen social awareness along with his ability to develop key relationships is widely acknowledged; and his wisdom coupled with his erudite skills enthrall audiences wherever he goes. As an embodiment of humility, he remains till date an extremely down to earth personality.
Shri Ravindra Chandra Bhargava, Chairman, Maruti Suzuki: Best known as an entrepreneurial scientist and reputed in industry circles as a veteran at planning and strategy, Shri Bhargava is, above all a great humanist. As the former C.E.O and Current Chairman, Maruti Suzuki, the largest automobile manufacturers in India, he has an illustrious career of exceptional diligence and hard work.
Not surprisingly, he was awarded the third highest civilian award in the Republic of India: the Padma Bhushan. In the past, Shri Bhargava served as the President and Chief Executive Officer of RCB Consulting Pvt. Ltd and has also had a distinguished career in the Civil Services. He has held several senior positions with the Government of India including the Joint Secretary in Ministry of Energy and Joint Secretary in Cabinet Secretariat. He has also served as the Director of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited and as the Chief Managing Director at Maruti Udyog Limited. Since childhood he had demonstrated great leadership qualities, well exemplified during his years as Alumni of Williams College, Massachusetts. His friends at Maruti Udyog Limited nicknamed him 'Kaedo', as he displayed austere habits. His acute insight and sharply honed analytical skills has helped millions of middle class Indians fulfill their dream of owning a car. In fact, it was he who had made India realize its true potential as a global hub for manufacturing.
An extremely humble person, it was under his tutelage that Maruti has evolved over the past three decades - first under government control and then as a company to decisively place India on the motorization map of the world. His adherence to punctuality made all the difference in his and his colleagues’ professional life. Despite his extensive schedule, he has managed to co-author a book, 'The Maruti Story', and has penned articles for a Japanese publication. To many, he is a successful samurai, steering placidly through life’s trials and tribulations, only to emerge as a winner all the way.
Shri Dinesh Kumar Sarraf, Chairman and Managing Director, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation: He is admired the world over for his contributions to the Oil & Gas Industry and has extensive experience of serving in professional bodies at the Board level for myriad organizations and community. ONGC, India's most valuable Maharatna public sector enterprise and one of the premier E&P companies in the world has grown by leaps and bounds under Shri Sarraf’s able leadership. He has been the trailblazer in raising the stagnant oil and gas output and assiduously exploring more reserves. With his profound knowledge and understanding, he has successfully undertaken numerous assignments and has held a number of important portfolios.
At a time when global oil and gas prices have plummeted, ONGC under his leadership is strongly emphasizing on adoption of the best operational and cost practices and appropriate oil and gas technologies, for realization of greater operational efficiencies. Under his leadership, ONGC has made the biggest ever financial decision in its history, unveiling an investment of over $5 Billion in the east coast oil and gas asset to enhance oil and gas production significantly on fast-track. OVL, which since inception had invested USD 17 billion in 32 assets in 15 countries till 2011, has struck over USD 11 billion worth deals in the past one year under his venerated policy decisions.
A post graduate in Commerce from the University of Delhi, Shri Sarraf is also a member and patron of the Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India and the Institute of Company Secretaries of India respectively. His eye for meticulous detail and focus as a researcher are unparalleled, bringing a whole bounty of success for his organisation.
Ms. Shradha Suri Marwah, Managing Director, Subros: A great motivator and a far sighted visionary, Ms. Shradha Suri Marwah is well known for her forthright, positive and constructive approach. Apart from her current role as Managing Director, Subros, she has held remarkable and significant portfolios with various public and private limited companies. She joined Subros in 2000 after a short stint with Six Continents, UK and Reebok India. She has more than 11 years of experience in the Automotive and Telecom industries. Ms Marwah is a critical part of the change management process in Subros and is responsible for strategy formulation and deployment. Subros Ltd is India's largest auto air conditioning maker in reference to the economy.
She is a highly focused and confident individual who though being a hard disciplinarian brings humility in everything she thinks and does. Having set high targets and worked diligently to achieve them, Ms Shradha’s temperament and attitude are the broad indicators of her success and strength. She has been a brilliant scholar throughout which is evident from her top notch academic credentials. In terms of academics, she has a Master of Science degree in International Marketing Management, London (U.K) and Master of Science in Information Systems from LSE (U.K), That apart, she is also an economics graduate from Delhi.
In the corporate world, Ms. Shradha Suri Marwah is highly revered for her unstinted commitment and determination, her deep compassion and ever inquisitive mind for pursuing scientific wisdom. Her sagacious and caring advice has always been a source of inspiration for her team, near and dear ones.
Ms. Pusarla Venkata Sindhu, Olympic Silver medalist and India’s Sports Icon: With her extraordinary commitment, service to the nation and liberal approach, Ms. Pusarla Venkata Sindhu, more popularly known as P.V. Sindhu, became the first Indian woman to win an Olympic silver medal. Her professionalism and ceaselss dedication in the pursuit of excellence have made her the youngest recipient of India’s fourth highest civilian honor: the Padma Shri. The most striking feature in her game is her attitude and the never-say-die spirit which has made her win awards and accolades across the globe including the Arjun Award by Government of India in 2013.
She’s an ardent Sportsperson which has made her the first Indian to win two back-to-back medals in the BWF World Badminton Championships after her bronze medal finish in 2014 BWF World Championships held in Denmark. Ms Sindhu’s seminal experiments in the field of sports have illuminated the path for other aspiring sportspersons in the country. Her discipline, competitiveness and single-minded dedication have brought her international recognition. It was a glorious moment of pride for every Indian when she broke into the top 20 of the BWF World Ranking in September 2012 at the tender age of 17.
Ms Sindhu has served our country with matchless grace, wisdom, and clarity of vision, best exemplified by the compliments that poured in from all across the world when she was awarded the FICCI Breakthrough Sportsperson of the Year 2014 and NDTV Indian of the Year 2014 awards.
