FMS follow two-stage selection process. In the first stage, profile based is short listing is done and those who clear the second stage are further called to appear for the GD, Extempore and PI round at the Delhi Campus of the institute. In the profile based shortlisting, candidate's performance in the tenth, twelfth, graduation is taken into account. For the GD, Extempore and PI round, knowledge of current affairs, factors affecting the business, Indian and global political scenario and the awareness and understanding of a candidate about their CV is judged in detail.

Beyond the CAT Entrance exam which remains same for both the FMS and IIMs, application process differs. The application process for the FMS commences somewhere in the month of November, whereas for other IIMs, the application window could differ. Candidates need be more vigilant to fill the registration form for each MBA institute on time. Another aspect which differs in the application process of IIMs and FMS is that a candidate needs to prepare a statement of purpose (SOP) to fill the FMS application form.  Extempore and GD is another major area of work in which candidates need to put special effort to clear the selection rounds at FMS. Contrary to this, IIMs conduct WAT and there is no such extempore round to test the aptitude of the aspirants.

'Extemporary' is the highlight of the selection process at FMS. Candidates need to develop deeper understanding and awareness about their work and academic profile, hobbies and current happening to excel in this round. Each candidate is spared time of 5 seconds to think and accumulate points to speak on the allotted topic. Apart from this, members of the selection panel assess a candidate on the basis of fluency, spontaneity, and knowledge of a particular topic in the time span of 1 minute. So you need to be on your toes to give your best in this round.

The race to get admission in the top MBA colleges begins from appearing in the common entrance exams i.e. CAT Exam. Candidates need to appear for the CAT exam and only after scoring marks as per the cut-off set by the college; they appear for the further rounds. The tricky portion in the FMS selection process is the 'Extempore' part wherein a candidate is allotted 1 minute to speak effectively on a topic. The topic is also assigned by the selection committee. The topic can be anything from candidate's CV, current affairs, previous work profile, hobbies etc. For say, if an aspirant has a work experience in the domain of marketing, he/she can be grilled about a campaign in marketing. After the extempore, next step to make it to FMS is GD and PI round which is similar for the FMS and IIMs.

The preparation for getting admission to the FMS is similar to the effort which one puts to make it to IIMs. The journey begins with scoring a high percentile in the CAT exam and thereafter in further selection rounds an aspirant's knowledge is evaluated by asking current affairs or topics from their personal experiences. The evaluators will seek candidate's opinions to ensure that they are the right ones to get shortlisted for the further rounds. FMS values and puts special focus on the opinions of the candidates when conducting extempore, GD and the PI round. It is the opinion of the candidate which will get him/her shortlisted for admission to the college.

The only difference between the selection process of FMS and IIMs is the GD round. IIMs generally conduct Written Ability Test (WAT) round in place of GD to shortlist the candidate. Further, the Personal Interview round remains same to shortlist the candidate for the admission.

The process to get admission in FMS is similar to that of IIMs. All the top MBA institutes like IIMs and FMS focus on candidate's ability to work and assess their mental acumen to assess if they hold the potential to become future managers. For an aspirant it is important to understand the type of questions asked in the interview of IIMs and FMS. In FMS, generally questions from the academic background and the current affairs are asked to test the aptitude and general awareness of a candidate. It is a little difficult to crack FMS interview, because an aspirant gets time of merely 10 minute to leave a mark on the interviewer.
