Law, especially Business Law and Corporate Law is an integral part of business management. Therefore, it is pivotal for MBA students to learn, understand and imbibe how to handle the legal aspects of business and use them to further the prospects of their company or organization. That is why Corporate Law and Regulations are deemed as one of the most critical functional disciplines for PGP students.

Indian Legal System - Compulsory Paper at IIM-Calcutta

Keeping this in mind, at IIM-Calcutta, the first year PGP students have to undergo a compulsory programme called the Indian Legal System, which covers all the legal aspects of business. The course covers the following fundamentals and concepts:

  1. Contract Law
  2. Companies Law
  3. Intellectual Property Rights
  4. Other key fundamental concepts

Elective Papers on Business Law at IIM- Calcutta

In the second year, PGP students at IIM Calcutta are offered an elective paper on Regulatory Compliance which is primarily centred on Corporate Law. Similarly, students can also opt for another elective called ‘World Trade Organization’ which is focused on the legal aspects of international business, especially business conducted through regulations issued by the World Trade Organization.

So, students at IIM Calcutta can opt for the following papers as elective in the second year:

Prof. V.K. Unni is a faculty of the Public Policy & Management Group at IIM Calcutta. Since April 2018, he is also the Chairperson of the PGP (Post Graduate Programme in Management) – the flagship management programme at IIM-Calcutta.
