After giving away the powers of Delhi College of Engineering to the Delhi government, the Delhi University is going to hand over responsibilities of University College of Medical Sciences to the government as well. At the Executive Council meeting the university administration decided to comply with the decision taken by the Cabinet to finally transfer administrative powers of UCMS to the hands of Delhi government. Though five members of the Executive Council were against the provision and repealed.
In the letter of dissent, these members pointed out that the matter has been placed before the EC as a reporting item. The EC was given a letter from October 2014 of the deputy secretary to the government which demands DU implement the Cabinet decision of August 2005. In response to this letter, DU officials in November 2014 agreed to hand over UCMS. The university does not even seek the complete proposal. The decision could not have been taken unilaterally by Delhi University officials. The Vice-Chancellor cannot use emergency powers to take such a decision. The complete proposal of the GNCT should have been placed in the Academic Council and the Executive Council for consideration.
Along with this, another decision that is likely to impact the DU elections, there would be a committee which would be constituted which would decide on students changing their names during college. It would now not be possible for the students who are going up for the candidature to put ‘A’ in as suffix in their names to be in the top of the list of contenders. A committee would be set up to review all the applications for the change in names from the students.
