According to reports from ministry of human resource and development (MHRD) the government is considering to conduct single common engineering entrance test based on the lines of NEET for all engineering colleges, including private institutions, across the country. It is said that this proposed Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) could start from 2018.
According to a government official “The aim is to make the process more transparent, standardized, and free of corruption and commercialization.”
Currently there are many engineering entrance exams, such as – IIT JEE, WBJEE, UPSEE etc., for granting admission to different engineering colleges. The most prestigious among them is IIT JEE which is held in two stages - JEE Main and JEE Advanced. The top-rankers from JEE-Main are eligible to write the JEE-Advanced paper.
Many self financed private colleges conduct their own entrance examination which often charge huge capitation fee from the students. These colleges compromise with quality education and serve most middle class families where an engineering degree is just a matter of prestige.
The proposed system will replace multiple engineering entrance tests with single common engineering entrance test. It will prove beneficial for students appearing for Class XII exam because now they have to prepare for only one exam along with board exam.
The ministry is yet working on finer details of this proposal. It is also not clear whether IIT JEE two tier exam will come under the ambit of this proposal. Also, strong oppositions are coming from private institutions and universities.
This is not the first time that this proposal has been put forward by MHRD. In 2012, similar proposal had been turned down by IITs. Amid oppositions and various legalities this proposal has a long way to go. It has been clearly said if everything goes right with this proposal it will be implemented from next academic year only.
Anyhow, if this proposal sees the day it will get huge support from students and parents as was seen with NEET exam this year for medical entrance examination.
