The Midnapore College in Kolkata received an autonomous status by University Grants Commission (UGC). Midnapore College is the fourth aided college in the state who has got this status after St Xavier's College, Ramkrishna Mission Narendrapur and RKM Belur.
The college established since 1873 is affiliated to Vidyasagar University as informed by an official of higher education department.
After getting the autonomy granted, the Midnapore College has now liberty from any bindings that affiliated colleges have over them.
2014-2015 onwards session of the college will have the permission to create its own curriculum besides having permission to conduct examinations on their own and also the publishing of the results independently. The intrusion of Vidyasagar University will only be limited to the approval for publishing of mark-sheets by the college, told the official.
Before awarding autonomous status, the UGC conducted inspection in advance followed by sending approval to the state government on 27 January.
The Midnapore College will now run as an autonomous body as a part of a new vision, stated another source in the department of higher education.
Former to this college, St Xavier's College was granted the permission for being an autonomous institute, said a teacher. The teacher added that receiving autonomy is advantageous and valuable for any college because this lead the college to run break free from the restraints of habitual delay in taking examinations and also in publishing results which is a norm in many state universities.
