The Mumbai varsity placed at 140th position among top 200 universities of Asia at the Quacquarelli Symonds 2013 Asia-wide university rankings that decreased from 44 spots below than the three years ago.
In the year of 2010, the rank of the University is 96 among the 200 top Asian Universities. Since 1990, Quacquarelli Symonds has been a leading global provider of higher education information used nine differently weighted parameters for ranking the universities. Employer reputation, academic reputation, papers per faculty, faculty-to-student ratio and citations per paper are some of the preferred parameters.
Only, the University of Pune and the University of Mumbai have ranked under top 200 universities in Asia among the state's 13 non-agricultural universities.
Pro vice-chancellor of the Mumbai University, Naresh Chandra said that ranking of university is a contentious issue. He also added that this a debatable issue and a lot of discussion is ongoing between academicians about the accurateness of rankings based on some parameters. Funding Lacking also seems to be a big barrier.
He added that the improvement will be introduced to make the ranking better.
