How Far Apart are the Dots?

(a) Guess the distance between any two dots. How many centimetres is it? Now measure it with the help of a scale. Did you guess right?

(b) Which two dots do you think are farthest from each other? Check your answer.

(c) Which two dots are nearest to each other? Check your answer.

(a) Distance between O and D = 0.8 cm

Distance measured with scale = 0.8 cm

So, I guessed it right.

(b) O and M are farthest from each other.

(c) O and D are nearest to each other.

(a) Make her right arm 1 cm longer than the left arm.

• Draw a cup 1 cm shorter than this cup.

• Draw a broom half as long as this broom.

• Draw another hair of double the length.

Jhumpa once read a list of the tallest people in the world. One of them was 272 cm tall! That is just double of Jhumpa’s height. How tall is Jhumpa? _______cm.

Height of the longest man = 272 cm

Jhumpa’s height = hall of longest man

∴Jhumpa’s height = 272 ÷ 2 = 136 cm

Thus, Jhumpa is 136 cm tall.

The Long and Short of Your Family!

(a) Who is the tallest in your family? _____________

(b) Who is the shortest in your family? ____________

(c) What is the difference between their heights? ___________

(a) My father is the tallest in my family.

(b) My younger brother is the shortest in the family.

(c) The difference between their heights is 70 cm.

1. Race

This is a 100 metre race for girls. Arundhati is nearest the finishing line. She is about 6 metres from it. Behind her is Rehana. Konkana and Uma are running behind Rehana. Look at the picture. To answer the questions below choose from these distances:

• 3 metres
• 6 metres
• 10 metres
• 15 metres

(a) How far is Rehana from Arundhati? _________

(b) How far ahead is Rehana from Konkana and Uma? __________

(c) How far are Konkana and Uma from the finishing line? ___________

(a) We see that the distance between Rehana and Arundhati  is half the distance between Arundhati and finishing line which is 6 metres.

Thus, Rehana is 6/2 = 3 metres from Arundhati.

(b) We see that the distance of Rehana from Konkana and Uma is double the distance between Rehana and Arundhati.

Thus, Rehana is 6 metres ahead of Konkana and Uma.

(c) Distance of the finishing line from Konkana and Uma = Distance between Rehana and Konkna, Knonkna + distance between Rehana and Arundhati + distance between Arundhati and finishing line = 6 m + 3 m + 6 m = 15 m

Thus, Konkana and Uma are 15 metres far from the finishing line.

2. Have you heard about a 1500 m or 3000 m race? (You remember that 1000 metres make 1 kilometre and 500 metres make half a kilometre.)

So you can say

(a) In a 1500 metres race people run _________ km

(b) In a 3000 metres race people run _________ km

We know that 1 km = 1000 m

And half km = 500 m

(a) 1500 m = 1000 m + 500 m = 1 km + Half km = 1 and a half km

(b) 3000 m = 3 × 1000 m = 3 × 1km = 3 km

Have you heard about marathon races in which people have to run about 40 kilometres? People run marathons on roads because the track of a stadium is only 400 metres.

(a) 10 rounds of a stadium track = _______ km

(b) So, if you run a marathon on a stadium track, you will have to complete ______rounds !

1000 m = 1 km

(a) Now, 1 round of the stadium track = Length of the stadium track= 400 m

∴10 rounds of the stadium track = 10×400 m = 4000 m = (4000/1000) km = 4 km

(b) Total length of the marathon race = 40 km = 40×1000 m = 40000 m

Distance covered in 1 round of stadium track = 400 m

∴Number of rounds in 40000 m = 40000/400 = 100

So, if you run a marathon on a stadium track, you will have to complete 100rounds !

Long Jump

This is the long jump for boys.

Dhanu has the longest jump of 3 metres 40 cm. Gurjeet is second. His jump is 20 cm less than Dhanu’s. Gopi comes third. His jump is only 5 cm less than Gurjeet’s jump.

(a) How long are Gurjeet’s and Gopi’s jumps? ___________________________________________

(b) Try and see how far you can jump.

(c) How far can you throw a ball? ________metres.

(d) Look for a big ball, like a football or volleyball. How far can you kick it? ________

(a) We know 1 m = 100 cm

Dhanu’s jump = 3 m 40 cm

Gurjeet’s jump is 20 cm less than that Dhanu’s jump.

∴Gurjeet’s jump = (3 m 40 cm) – 20 cm = 3 m 20 cm

Now, Gopi’s jump is 5 cm less than Gurjeet’s jump.

∴Gopi’s jump = (3 m 20 cm) – 5 cm = 3 m 15 cm

(b) I can jump a distance of 3metres.

(c) I can throw a ball to a distance of 5-6 metres.

(d) I can kick a big ball to a distance of 6 metres.

Note: Answers b, c and d are the reference answers. However, students are suggested to perform the activities mentioned in these questions and then write their answers based on their own observations.

Find out from the table

1. How many centimetres more should Chandra Pal jump to equal the Men’s World Record for high jump?

Men’s world record for high jump = 2 m 45 cm

Chandra Pal’s jump = 2m 17 cm

Centimetres required by Chandra Pal to meet men’s world record = (2 m 45 cm) – (2m 17 cm) = 28 cm

2. How many centimetres higher should Bobby A. jump to reach 2 metres?

Remember that 1m = 100 cm

Half metre = ?

We know that 1 m = 100 cm

Bobby A’s high jump = 1m 91 cm = 100 cm + 91 cm = 191 cm

Now, 2 metres = 2 × 100 = 200 cm

Thus, to reach 2 m, Bobby A needs to jump higher = 200 cm − 191 cm = 9 cm

Also, half metre = 100/2 = 50 cm.

3. Galina’s long jump is nearly

(a) 7 metres

(b) 7 and a half metres

(c) 8 metres

(b) 7 and a half metres

As long jump of Galina C. = 7 m 52 cm = 7 m 50 cm (approximately) = 7 and a half metres

4. Look at the Women’s World Records. What is the difference between the longest jump and the highest jump?

Longest jump in women’s world record = 7 m 52 cm

Highest jump in women’s world record = 2 m 9 cm

So, difference between the longest jump and the highest jump = (7 m 52 cm) – (2 m 9 cm)

= 5 m 43 cm

5. If Mike P. could jump ________ centimetres longer, his jump would be full 9 metres.

We know that 1 m = 100 cm

Jump of Mike P. = 8 m 95 cm = 8 × 100 + 95 cm = 800 + 95 = 895 cm

Now 9 m = 9×100 = 900 cm

Thus, to reach 9 metres distance, Mike P. needs to jump = 900 cm − 895 cm = 5 cm

6. Whose high jump is very close to two and half metres?

(a) Stefka K.

(b) Chandra Pal

(c) Javier S.

(d) Bobby A.

Two and half metres = 2 m + Half metre = 2 m 50 cm

High jump of Stefka K. = 2 m 9 cm

High jump of Chandra Pal = 2 m 17 cm

High jump of Javier S. = 2 m 45 cm

High jump of Bobby A. = 1 m 91 cm

Comparing above records with 2 m 50 cm, we find that the high jump of Javier S. is very close to two and half metres.

Running Exercise

(a) The doctor has told Devi Prasad to run 2 km every day to stay fit. He took one round of this field. How far did he run?

The field was very far from his home. So he chose a park nearby. The boundary of the park was about 400 metres long.

(b) How many rounds of the park must Devi Prasad run to complete 2 km?

(c) One day the weather was very good and a cool breeze was blowing. He felt so good that he kept jogging till he got tired after 8 rounds. That day he ran ___________ km and __________ metres !

1000 m = 1 km

(a) Distance covered in 1 round of the field = (500 + 500 + 500 + 500) m = 2000 m

= 2000/1000 = 2 km

So, Devi Prasad ran 2 km in one round of the field.

(b) Devi Prasad needs to run 2 km = 2 × 1000 = 2000 m

One round of park = 400 m

Total rounds to cover 2000 m = 2000/400 = 5

So, Devi Prasad must run 5 rounds of park to complete 2 km.

(c) 1 round of the park = 400 m

8 rounds of the park = 400 × 8 = 3200 m

We know that 1000 m = 1 km

∴ 3200 m = 3000 m + 200 m = 3 km 200 m

Thus, Devi Prasad ran 3 km and 200 metres.

How Many Rooms High?

The QutubMinar is 72 metres high.

(b) Guess how many rooms, one on top of the other, will be equal to the qutubMinar.

Explain how you made a guess.

(a) Our class room is about 4 metres high.

(b) Height of the QutubMinar = 72 metres

Number of rooms = 72/4 = 18

From Kozhikode to Thalassery

Subodh is going to Kozhikode which is 24 kilometres (km) away. Manjani is going to Thalassery which is 46 km away in the opposite direction. How far is Kozhikode from Thalassery? _________

Distance between Kozhikode and Thalassery = (24 + 46) km = 70 km

How Far is Your Home from School?

Momun comes to school from very far. He first walks about 400 metres to the pond. With slippers in his hands, he then walks 150 metres through the pond. Next he runs across the 350 metres wide green field. Then he carefully crosses the 40 metres wide road to reach his school.

How much does Momun walk every day to reach school? ________

Is it more than 1 km? _________

Distance covered by Momun to reach the pond = 400 m

Distance covered by Momunto cross the pond = 150 m

Distance covered by Momunto cross the green field = 350 m

Distance covered by Momun to cross the road = 40 m

Thus, total distance covered by Momun to reach his school

= (400 + 150 + 350 + 40) m = 940 m

We know that 1 km = 1000 m

And 940 m is less than 1000 m.

So, Momunwalks 940 m every day to reach his school which is not more than 1 km.

1.How long is the thread in a reel?

2.How long is the string of a kite reel? Can it be more than a kilometer long?

1. The length of the thread in a reel depends on its size. Regular sizes of reel may have 100 m to 500 m long thread. However, in some bigger reels, thread may be even more than 1 km long.

2. The length of the string of a kite reel depends upon its size. Yes, it can be more than a kilometerlong.

3. The length of a single thread required to make a handkerchief can be about 100 metres.

1. QutubMinar is the highest building that I have seen. It is about 24 rooms high.

2. A kite can go about 20-30 metres of height. No, it cannot go higher than the QutubMinar.

3. A plane can fly at about 5000 metres high. Yes, it can fly higher than the Mount Everest.

4. Yes, I have seen clouds below me when I visited a hill station.
