Think and Tell

(i) How did the ant know that the other ants were not from its group?

(ii) How did the guard ant recognise this ant?


(i) Ants have antennae which they use to smell, touch, feel and communicate with other ants. With the help of these special senses the ant came to know that the other ants were not from its group.

(ii) The guard ant recognised this ant by its smell.

Try This and Write

Drop some sugar, jaggery or anything sweet on the ground. Wait until the ants come there.

(i) How long did it take for the ants to come?

(ii) Did one ant come first or a group of ants came together?

(iii) What did the ants do with the food?

(iv) Where do they go from there?

(v) Do they move in a line?


(i) It took about 15-20 minutes for ants to come.

(ii) One ant came first and then a group of ants came tere.

(iii) The ants carried the food and started moving away.

(iv) They go to their holes.

(v) Yes, they all move in a line.

Now carefully, without harming the ants, block their path for a while with a pencil.

(vi) Now observe, how do the ants move?

(vii) Now can you guess why the ants behaved like that when you blocked their path?


(vi) Ants climb up on the pencil and start moving in line towards a particular direction.


Ants move in a line by sensing the smell of the leading ants. Now, when we blocked their path they moved in a line again by following the smell of the leading ants.

1.  Have you ever been troubled by mosquitoes? Just think, how do they know where you are?


Mosquitoes can find us by the smell of our body. They can also recognise us by the heat of our body.

2. Have you seen a dog sniffing here and there? What do you think it is trying to smell?


Yes, I have seen a dog sniffing here and there. Dogs do this to check if any another dog has come into their area by smelling its urine or potty.

(i) In what ways do human beings make use of this special sense of smell of dogs?

(ii) When do you find your sense of smell helpful to you? List some examples. Like— to know by its smell that food has gone bad or that something is burning.

(iii) Name the animals that you would be able to recognise only by their smell, without seeing them.

(iv) Write the names of five things whose smell you like and five things whose smell you do not like.

(v) Do you and your friends have similar answers?


(i) This special sense of smell of dogs is used by humans in the following ways:

  • For catching criminals
  • For detecting undesirable things or bombs

(ii) Our sense of smell can be helpful to avoid accidents in case of gas leak, burning wires etc.

(iii) We can recognise Dogs, cats, fish, etc. by their smell.

(i) Do the clothes of any of your family members smell? Whose?

(ii) Did you ever come across any smell in a crowded place such as a fair, bus, train etc.


(i) Yes, when my father comes back home from his job, his clothes smell unpleasant.

(ii) Yes, a have come across some foul smell in a crowded bus. This is people’s body order or smell of sweat.

Think and Discuss

(i) Sushila covered her nose when she cleaned Deepak’s nappy, but not when she cleaned her daughter. Why do you think she did this?

(ii) How do you feel when you walk near a heap of garbage? Think of the children who spend the whole day picking things from such garbage.

(iii) Is a smell ‘good’ or ‘bad’ for everyone in the same way? Or does it depend on how each one feels about it?


(i) May be Deepak’s nappy is dirty with potty but her daughter’s nappy had pee only. As the smell of potty is more unpleasant than pee, so Sushila had to cover her nose while cleaning Deepak’s nappy but not while cleaning her daughter’s nappy.

(ii) I feel bad when I walk near a heap of garbage. The children who spend the whole day picking things from such garbage may not find it that bad they have become used to the smell of garbage.

(iii) It depends on how a person feels or thinks about a particular smell.

Let’s See

(i) Write the name of a bird which has eyes in front of its head (like in humans).

(ii) Write the names of some birds which have eyes on either side of the head. What is the size of their eyes as compared to the size of their head?


(i) An owl has eyes in front of its head (like in humans).

(ii) Birds like sparrow, crow, pigeon, eagle, etc. have eyes on either side of the head. The size of their eyes is much smaller than that of their head.

Looking with One or Both Eyes

Close your right eye or cover it with your hand. Tell your friend to stand to your right, at some distance, and ask him to do some action (wave hand, shake head, etc.)

(i) Could you see your friend’s action, without moving your neck?

(ii) Now try to look at your friend’s action with both your eyes open but without moving your neck.

(iii) What was the difference on looking with one or both eyes?

(iv) Now toss a small ball or a coin and try to catch it. Try this with both your eyes open. Then close one eye and try to catch it. When was it easier to catch?

(v) Imagine how it would be to have your eyes in place of your ears? What would you be able to do then, which you cannot do now?

(vi) Now can you guess from what distance an eagle in the sky can see a roti on the ground?


(i) No, I could not see my friend’s action without moving my neck.

(ii) I was able to see my friend’s actions with both my eyes open and without moving my neck.

(iii) With both my eyes open, I can see a wider range of area without moving my neck.

(iv) It was easier to catch the ball with both eyes open.

(v) If I would have eyes in place of my two ears then I would be able to see on my left and right sides clearly without moving my neck.

(vi) An eagle in the sky can see a roti on the ground from a distance of one and a half to two kilometres.

Sharp ear


(i) The names of ten animals whose ears can be seen.

(ii) The names of some animals whose ears are bigger than our ears.


(i) Ten animals whose ears can be seen are: dog, cat, elephant, cow, buffalo, rabbit, lion, tiger, horse and monkey.

(ii) Animals whose ears are bigger than our ears are: elephant, dog, horse, buffalo, cow, etc.


Is there some link between the size of animals’ ears and their hearing?


I think the link is that the large sized ears of animals can collect more sound waves which make their hearing power stronger than ours.

Try This

1. For this activity find a quiet place in your school. Tell one of your friends to stand at a short distance and ask him to say something softly. The rest of you should listen carefully. Then all of you put your hands behind your ears, as shown in the picture. Let the same child say something again as softly as before. In which case was the sound sharper? Ask your friends too.


I could hear a sharper voice with my hands behind my ears.

2. Put your hands over your ears and say something. Can you hear your own voice?


Yes, I can hear my own voice.

3. Sit near a desk. Tap the desk once with your hand. Listen carefully. Now put your ear on the desk as shown in the picture. Tap on the desk once again with your hand. Listen again. Was there any difference in the sound of the tap?


Yes, when I put my ear on the desk I could hear a sharper sound of the tap.

(i) Yes, I can understand the sound of some animals like dog and cat.

(ii) Yes, some pet animals like dog, cat and parrot can understand our language.

Sleeping and Waking

(i) Have you noticed that during the cold season you cannot see any lizard in the house? Where do you think they have gone?


Yes, I have noticed that lizards are not seen during the cold season. I think they must have gone for long sleep at a warm place to escape cold.

Given here is the sleeping time of some animals. Below each picture write for how many hours a day that animal sleeps.



Here each circle is divided into 12 equal sectors. As a day has 24 hours, so sector is taken equal to 2 hours.

For Cow:

No. of shaded sectors = 2

So, sleeping time of cow = 2 × 2 = 4 hours

For Python:

No. of shaded sectors = 9

So, sleeping time of python = 9 × 2 = 18 hours

For Giraffe:

No. of shaded sectors = 1

So, sleeping time of giraffe = 1 × 2 = 2 hours

For Cat:

No. of shaded sectors = 6

So, sleeping time of cat = 6 × 2 = 12 hours

(i) The tiger is one of the most alert animals. And yet, today tigers are in danger. What do you think are some of the dangers to tigers in the jungle?

(ii) Can human beings also be a threat to animals? How?


(i) Poaching and illegal hunting are the biggest threats for tigers which can even cause the extinction of this animal. Besides this deforestation is causing tigers to lose their natural home and making their survival tough.

(ii) Yes, human beings can also be a threat to animals. Human beings kill animals for hide and other body parts. Also forests are being destroyed to develop industries and build homes due to which the natural habitat of animals is reduced.

What we have learnt

(i) Have you noticed that sometimes singers put their hand on their ear when they sing? Why do you think they may be doing this?

(ii) Give examples of animals that may have a very strong sense of sight, hearing or smell.


(i) Yes, I have noticed that singers sometimes put their hand on their ear while singing. They do this to listen to their own voice and have control on it.

(ii) Animals with a strong sense of sight: Eagle, Vulture, Hawk

Animals with a strong sense of hearing: Elephant, Monkeys, Tiger

Animals having a strong sense of smell: Dogs, Tigers, Lions
