(ii) How far have you walked at one time? How far can you walk?
(i)Yes, I saw mountains during my trip to Shimla last year. I also climbed up the mountains.
(ii) I walked about 2-3 kilometres at one time. I think I can walk upto 5 kilometres.
What do you think about the paths on the mountains? Draw a picture.
Paths are mountains are sloping and in zigzag pattern.

(i) What do you think about the responsibilities of a group leader?
(ii) How would you feel if you were made a leader in such a camp?
(iii) What does a monitor in your class have to do?

(i) Responsibilities of a group leader include:
- Taking care of each member of the group
- Maintaining discipline among all
- Guiding all members to the right path
(ii) I would feel happy and prestigious on being given such responsible job.
(iii) The monitor of our class does the following jobs:
- Maintaining discipline inthe class in teacher’s absence
- Arranging things of daily use in class like chalk, duster, etc.
- Taking care of class register
- Collecting notebooks or test copies for teacher’s checking work
(iv) Yes, I would like to be the class monitor. It will be a wonderful and challenging task to lead my class.

(i) What kinds of tools are needed for climbing mountains?
(ii) Have you ever seen a hook and rope being used for anything else? Where?
(iii) What else can we use if we want to cross a river in the mountains?
(iv) Why do we need extra energy on the mountains?

(vi) Have you ever done anything adventurous? If yes, tell your class. Write about it in your own words.
(i) A thick rope, sling, stick, axe,oxygen cylinder, hunter shoes, etc. are needed for climbing the mountains.
(ii) Yes, I have seen hook and rope being used by people to pull out water bucket from a well.
(iii) We can cross a river in the mountains using a bridge, trolley or a boat.
(iv) We need extra energy to climb up the mountains as we have to move opposite to the earth’s downwards pull, gravitational force.
(v) Yes, when I visited Shimla last year, I crossed a mountain river using rope, sling and pitons.

(i) Have you ever climbed a tree? How did you feel? Were you scared? Did you ever fall?
(ii) Have you ever seen someone climb a small wall? What do you think is the difference between climbing a wall and climbing a high rock?
(i) Yes, I climbed a tree once to pluck mangoes from it. It was quite adventurous. Yes, I was a little scared when I reached at the higher branches. No, I had never fallen down from a tree.
(ii) Yes, I have seen children climbing a small wall many times. I think climbing a small wall is easier as compared to climbing a high rock as you are not afraid of falling from height in this case.

(i) Is there anyone in your class whose language you do not understand, or who does not understand yours? What do you do in such a case?
(ii) Have you ever lost your way? What did you do then?
(iii) Why do you think Khondonbi would have sung loudly?
(iv) Have you ever seen someone doing something special to get over their fear? What and when?
(i) Yes, there are few children in my class whose language I do not understand. We communicate using a few English words and sign language.
(ii) Yes, I had lost my way two to three times in the crowded places of city. At that time I asked local people to help me find the right way.
(iii) I think Khondonbi would have sung loudly to get over her fear. She would also have sung loudly so that other group members could listen and find her easily.
(iv) Yes, I have seen many people yelling aloud while riding on a high rise swing. They seemed to be yelling to get over their fear.

(i) Why do you think a drain was dug around the tent?
(ii) Besides mountaineering, what are other activities that can be called adventurous? Why?
(i) I think the drain was dug around the tent so that insects, snakes, etc. could not enter the tent.
(ii) Besides mountaineering, activities like riding on high swings, rock climbing, trekking and river rafting can be called adventurous. All these activities need the person to control his fear of height or water.

Imagine and Write
You are on a mountain. How do you feel there? What can you see? What do you feel like doing there?
I feel very excited. I can see the high peaks covered with green forests, the vast blue sky over my head and the calm but scary deep valleys. I feel like I am at the top of the world. It feels like talking to the nature at this beautiful scene.

(i) Why did Bachhendri put up the Indian flag on the peak?
(ii) When have you seen our national flag being hoisted?
(iii) Have you seen the flag of any other country? Where?
(i)Bachhendri Pal put up the Indian flag on the peak to honour our country.
(ii)I have seen our national flag being hoistedduring Independence Day and Republic Day celebrations.
(iii) Yes, I have seen the flags of many other countries. I have seen them in books, on TV and on internet.
What we have learnt
Explain why it was adventurous and challenging to climb a mountain. How would you prepare if you were to climb a mountain? What would you take with you? Write in your own words.
(i) Climbing a mountain was challenging due to the risky factors like high altitudes, steep slopes of mountains, dangerous rivers, deep valleys, etc. To cross these is a very challenging task.
If I were to climb a mountain, I would take a thick rope, sling, hunter shoes, plastic sheet, pitons, diary, torch, towel, soap, windcheater, whistle,food packets, water bottle, glucose, snacks, etc. Besides all these necessary things I would also carry a camera to capture the memories.
