Measure Stamps

maths ncert class 5

Look at these interesting stamps.

(а) How many squares of one centimetre side does stamp A cover? _______And Stamp B? _______

(b) Which stamp has the biggest area? How many squares of side 1 cm does this stamp cover? How much is the area of the biggest stamp? _________  square cm.

(c) Which two stamps have the same area? _________ How much is the area of each of these stamps? __________ square cm.

(d) The area of the smallest stamp is __________ square cm. The difference between the area of the smallest and the biggest stamp is _________ square cm.

Answer.

(a) Stamp A covers 18 squares, each of one centimetre side and Stamp B covers 8 such squares.

(b) Stamp A has the biggest area.

Area = length x breadth

Length of stamp A = 1+1+1+1+1+1 = 6 cm

Breadth of stamp A = 1+1+1 = 3 cm

Thus, area of stamp A = 6 x 3 = 18 square cm.

(c) Stamps covering same number of squares will have the same areas.

Here stamp D and stamp F both cover 12 squares with 1cm side.

Area of each stamp = 12 square cm.

(d) Stamp E which covers the least number of squares (four) has the smallest area.

The area of the smallest stamp = 4 square cm.

The difference between the area of the smallest and the biggest stamp is = 18 – 4 = 14 square cm.
