1. How do you think stereotypes, about what women can or cannot do, affect women’s right to equality?
Stereotypes, about what women can or cannot do affect women’s right to equality by making them confined to certain roles and professions in society. It is believed that women do not have the technical mind to be engineers and scientists and that they are only fit for professions like teaching and nursing. This stereotype about which profession women can or cannot pursue is the biggest obstacle in their fight for equality. They are considered inferior to men.
2. List one reason why learning the alphabet was so important for women like Rashundari Devi, Ramabai and Rokeya.
In olden days, women were forbidden education as it was considered dangerous for their moral development and family life. Hence, learning the alphabet was important for women like Rashsundari Devi, Ramabai and Rokeya because by learning how to read and write, these women achieved a degree of independence and became able to achieve their goals. They wrote letters, stories and autobiographies which describe their own struggle against inequality prevalent in society.
3. “Poor girls drop out of school because they are not interested in getting an education”. Re-read the last paragraph on page 62 and explain why this statement is not true.
Poor girls do not leave school willingly, rather they are forced to leave for a number of reasons which are mentioned below:
- Lack of transport facilities for going to school.
- Poor financial status of the family due to which parents are unable to bear the cost of educating their children.
- Preference is given for educating boys.
- Discrimination by teachers or classmates.
4. Can you describe two methods of struggle that the women movements used to raise issues? If you had to organize a struggle against stereotypes, about what women can or cannot do, what method would you employ from the ones that you have read about? Why would you choose this particular method?
The two methods of struggle that the women's movement used to raise issues are:
(a) Campaigning: It was an important part of the women’s movement. They spread their message through public meetings, conferences, etc. Campaigns helped women to get new laws passed in their interest. One notable example is the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005 that was passed by the government in 2006. In a similar manner, the campaigning by women in the late 90s gave birth to a law that protected women from sexual harassment at the workplace.
(b) Protesting: Protesting was done through public rallies and demonstrations. Public protesting has always been the most powerful tool for drawing the attention of mass to injustices being occurred to a section of society. Raising awareness through protests helped women to convince people that certain negative stereotypes were a hindrance to the progress of women in the society.
I would choose the method of raising awareness by carrying the protests peacefully because I believe that violence is not a justified method to achieve your aim.
